An unusual salute in unusual times

First United Methodist Church of North Liberty honors its high school seniors
The Corbett family showed their support for the Class of 2020 as they participated in a drive-through “reverse parade” Sunday, May 17, at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty. Eight seniors from Clear Creek Amana and Liberty High are members of the congregation and were honored during the brief event.

NORTH LIBERTY– Eight high school seniors were honored in a “reverse parade” Sunday, May 17, at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty. The eight, graduates of Clear Creek Amana and Liberty High School, are members of the congregation, and due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, celebrating them took a different path this year; one leading through the parking lot as congregants and others drove by honking and waving.
Pastor Beth Graham explained, “Traditionally we have a service every year where we honor our graduates, and we celebrate them with cake and a party. And obviously that wasn’t something feasible this year, but we knew it was important. We knew it was something we wanted to do, so we put our heads together.”
Having seen the popularity of reverse birthday parades, “We figured, you know, we can do this! We have a parking lot, we can manage this.”
Tables were set up under canopies for the eight, with four participating and all eight represented. “It’s just a great way for the congregation to come and physically see their students who are graduating, and honor them and respect them, and congratulate them,” Graham said.
Aiden Langridge and Tyler Schrepfer represented CCA while Jayla Lamp, LeeAnn Potter, Elizabeth Davis, Selena Wisner and Chanse Benner are from Liberty.
