Solon school start moved to Monday, Aug. 31

SOLON– The loss of power has set the Solon school district back a week.
Classes for the Solon Community School District (SCSD) will now begin Monday, Aug. 31, with a modified schedule, according to an announcement posted to the district’s website by Director of Teaching and Learning Josh Lyons.
“Due to the magnitude of the damage caused by Monday’s storm, and days without electricity, internet and other services, we are going to delay our student start date to Monday, Aug. 31,” wrote the district’s administrative team in a letter to parents and families Friday, Aug. 14. “It is imperative that we are able to implement all facets of the Return to Learn plan. Losing the ability to communicate with parents and staff hindered implementation of this plan and preparing fully for the start of the school year.”
The delayed start date will provide district personnel additional days for training, orientation, and preparation for the safe return of all students to school, the letter continued. The delay will also allow building principals the opportunity to reschedule informational webinars that were postponed.
School for all kindergarten through fifth grade (Lakeview and Solon Intermediate School) students will begin Monday, Aug. 31, with a 1:45 p.m. early dismissal.
Middle school and high school students with last names A-K will also start school Aug. 31, but will have no school Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Middle school and high school students with last names L-Z will come back Tuesday, Sept. 1, with a 1:45 p.m. early dismissal.
The start date for preschool will be Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Further information regarding the impact of the new school start date on the school calendar will be shared at a later date, according to the announcement.
“Those K-8 families who have chosen the Edmentum (online) option will receive updated information regarding timelines for enrollment. Students who will be participating in the Apex Learning option at the High School level will continue to receive communication regarding this online learning platform,” the release continued.
“You will be receiving additional information next week from building principals about scheduled webinars and other topics related to your child’s 2020-21 school year,” the letter concluded. “We are excited for the school year to start and the opportunity to support our students’ social emotional wellbeing and academic needs in a safe, purposeful, and supportive environment. Thank you for your support and patience through these unprecedented times.”
