Solon Public Library

New circulation system

Staff appreciates your patience and understanding during our transition to the new catalog/circulation system. Those of you who use the on-line card catalog outside the library will not be able to place holds on material currently checked out. This is a temporary situation while they are running two catalog systems– what may appear to be in on the screen you are viewing, may actually be out on the old system. The library staff will be happy to place holds on items for you, just call 319-624-2678. The new catalog system is now displayed on the website, and your sign-on will be slightly different. You will enter your patron number (just as you do now) and then enter USERPASS for the password. This will gain you initial entry and then you will be asked to create your own password. Another tip for using the new system– if you don’t know how to spell a word in the title your browsing for, type in what you do know and add an asterisk ( * ) at the end. This search will bring up more options for you to choose from. As an example: they tried searching “The Queen of Ver” with no success. (They were searching for the DVD, The Queen of Versailles.) Then try The Queen of Ver* and note the difference. They anticipate that the transition will be complete by March 1.

March Storytime

Storytime is a program every Tuesday for children ages two through five, featuring stories, songs, and rhymes followed by a craft. Younger siblings are also welcome to attend. After March 6, we will have a special guest Storytime leader, Debb Green, until a new youth services librarian has been hired.

March early-out activities

On school early-out days, the library offers free programming for school-aged children. On Thursday, March 7, we will be showing an animated film starring old favorites Manny, Diego, and Sid in a brand-new adventure. The film is rated PG and the program will last from 1 until 2:45 p.m.

Think spring– think Solon area garage sales

With spring and spring cleaning just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the annual Solon Area Garage Sale. This annual event happens on the first Saturday in June, but since almost half of last year’s registered sales were also open on Friday, we are now calling it the Solon Area Garage Sale Days, and it will be May 31 and June 1 this year. Participants can register for only Friday, only Saturday, or both days. Registration information will be available at the library by mid-March. If you don’t have enough items for a sale of your own, you may donate your items to the library for our sale. Please remember, though, that the library will not accept clothing, encyclopedias, LPs, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, old VCRs, old TV sets, or old computers. Please appropriately recycle those items. We will accept items for the garage sale anytime– no need to wait until May.

SHS and Community Reading Together April 4

This year’s selection for the Thinking Critically About Issues in Science: Solon HS and the Community Reading Together program is “The Panic Virus” by Seth Mnookin. Copies are available at the library. This 2011 book draws on interviews with parents, public-health advocates, scientists, and anti-vaccine activists to tackle a fundamental question: How do we decide what the truth is? The Solon High School Media Center will host the community book discussion on Thursday, April 4, from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Bring your own lunch for a social time at 11 a.m. A discussion will be led by anatomy and physiology students.

Library board of trustees

Mike McLaughlin is the newest member of the library’s board of trustees, replacing T.L. Green. Among its duties, the board of trustees sets the policies for the library. Mike joins the other members of the board, Kari Pyle, Paula Sears, Deanna Kleinsmith, Jeff Kreinbring, Jackie Nemecek, and Jeff Schadler and will serve through December 2016.

A fond farewell to youth librarian Jennifer Leveck

After almost four years in the position of youth services librarian, Jennifer Leveck is leaving for a new position in the Des Moines library system. Jen has done a tremendous job in Solon with the Babygarten program, weekly Storytimes, Summer Reading Program, and collection development. Her last full day will be March 7. Please be sure to stop in and say goodbye and wish her well in her new position.
