Liberty girls fall, 51-28

Comets outshine the Lightning

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity girls fell to 6-13 in their debut basketball season Tuesday, Feb. 6, with a 51-28 loss to the visiting Comets, from Bellevue.
The Comets blazed to a 16-9 lead in the first period and held a 28-13 advantage at halftime.
Cora Saunders led Liberty with nine points, including a pair of 3-point baskets, Sam McPherson had a six-point night, Megan Davis contributed four points, while Cecily Johnston and Jenna Saunders produced three points apiece. Isabel Smith added two points, while Brylee Klosterman put up one point. Klosterman led the Lightning in rebounds with four.
The Comets improved to 17-5 to close out their regular season.
A Monday, Feb. 12, Class 4A regional quarterfinal win in Dubuque against Dubuque Wahlert would send the Bolts to Clear Creek Amana High School, in Tiffin, on Saturday, Feb. 17, for a 7 p.m. semifinal against the Clippers. The Wahlert Golden Eagles held a 6-14 record ahead of the Friday, Feb. 9, game against Iowa City City High and defeated Liberty, 60-36, on Jan. 16. The Clippers were 11-9 after the Tuesday, Feb. 6, loss to undefeated Marion. The semifinal winner advances to the final on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the highest remaining ranked seed’s site. Waterloo East, Independence and Marion make up the upper half of the Region 4 bracket with the Bolts, Golden Eagles and Clippers.
