Liberty girls end 2019 1-6

City High soars past the Lightning, 87-31

NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High varsity girls’ basketball squad ended 2019 on a sour note. The City High Little Hawks flew by them for an 87-31 win on Friday, Dec. 20. City took a commanding 30-8 lead in the first quarter and held a 54-16 halftime advantage. The Little Hawks pounded in 22 points in the third, holding the Lightning to only six, for a 76-22 lead going into the final period.
The loss dropped the Bolts to 1-6. It was Liberty’s second consecutive loss after a Dec. 13 win on the road against Waterloo East.
The season opened with a 66-46 road loss to Waterloo West followed by losses to Keokuk (40-31), Cedar Rapids Washington (69-35) and Dubuque Senior (54-49).
Six seniors lead the Bolts this season: Isabel Smith, Cecily Johnston, Sam McPherson, Elliott Meika, Erica Heisdorffer and Neshy Byrd. As of Tuesday, Dec. 24, McPherson was Liberty’s leading scorer with 56 points on the season and an average of 11.2 points per game. Smith had 40 points and was averaging 10 points per game.
The Bolts return to the hardwood Friday, Jan. 3, as Waterloo West visits. The junior varsity game is set for 6 p.m. and the varsity tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. Liberty travels to Dubuque Wahlert Catholic High School on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and is at Cedar Rapids Xavier on Friday, Jan. 10.
