Lady Spartans pound their way into postseason

Solon sweeps Washington (Ia.) to close out schedule

WASHINGTON– The Lady Spartans made a powerful offensive statement to close out the regular season.
Solon’s varsity softball team pounded 41 hits and scored 34 runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Washington (Ia.) Demons on the road July 13.
The Lady Spartans broke open a one-run game in the opener, scoring 13 runs in the last four innings for a 20-7 victory then roared back from a 7-6 deficit to take a 14-9 win in the nightcap.
The host Demons took a 3-1 lead in the first inning of game one, but Solon responded with six runs in the top of the second. Washington whittled away, closing the gap to 7-6 going into the fourth inning.
The Lady Spartans seized control, scoring once in the fourth and then padding the lead with four, three and five runs in the successive innings, while holding the Demons to just one more run in the bottom of the fifth.
Sophomore Carly Ellison and incoming freshman Kendall Jensen combined to limit Washington to seven hits and four earned runs. Jensen allowed a single hit and no runs over two innings.
Freshman Hilary Wilson fueled the offense, going 4-6 with five RBI. Junior catcher Sarah Heick was 4-4 with a double, two walks and three RBI, while Ellison and senior Peyton Sands each had three hits. Senior Jadyn Jeter added four RBI, while Sands and sophomore Camryn Keith produced two RBI each.
Solon drew eight walks and struck out only twice, batting .553 with 21 hits against the Demon pitchers.
The Lady Spartans out-hit the Demons 20-7 in game two, but still had to overcome seven runs by the home team in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Solon led early, scoring three runs in the second and tacking on a run in each of the next three innings.
Down 7-6, the Lady Spartans broke through in the top of the sixth for eight runs, making it 14-7. Washington plated two runners in the home half for the final 14-9 score.
Sophomore Ava Stebral was 4-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Wilson was 3-5 with a double and two RBI. Sands went 2-3 with a triple, an RBI and three runs scored, while junior Monet Barnhouse had a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Keith was 3-4 with three RBI.
Senior Madison Sprague went 4 2/3 innings on the mound, striking out four and walking six while allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits. Senior Kayla West pitched 2 1/3 in relief, striking out three and hitting three batters while giving up two unearned runs on a single hit.
The wins moved Solon to 19-13 for the regular season.
