Join Solon team at NAMI Annual Walk Saturday, April 27

IOWA CITY– The four churches of Solon collaborating on mental health programming have established a community walking team to join the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Annual Walk Saturday, April 27, at the Terry Trueblood Recreation Area in Iowa City.
The community team is called Solon Striders: Walking with Purpose, and its members are encouraging the public to advocate for mental health awareness by taking part. Sign up to be a Solon Strider and/or donate to the team through the NAMI website. The Striders set a fundraising goal of $5,000 but would love to raise much more, as all donations directly support the mission of NAMI.
“I have mental illness in my family,” team member Bonnie Mattliano said. “It is a debilitating illness.”
"There are so many unmet needs to support those with mental illness and their families,” Team Captain Keela Herr said. “My uncle had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and we have friends with mental illness, as well, so know firsthand the stigma, lack of awareness and misunderstanding that exists. NAMI is a great organization dedicated to building better lives for millions of Americans with mental illness The NAMI walk is a great way to do something to help advance their mission."
National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization. It provides support, education and advocacy for millions of Americans affected by mental illness. As such, it is a lifeline for many people and families who need a place to turn– NAMI gives them help and hope. Each year, the NAMI Walk raises funds to support its outreach activities.
Check-in is at 8:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 10 a.m.
