Jeffrey S. Astor

Jeffrey Scott Astor, 56, of North Liberty, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with Leukemia. He passed peacefully at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas surrounded by loved ones. Jeff was born to James and Laura Astor on Dec. 12, 1959. He was the youngest of five siblings: Donna Birkicht and friend; Cary Rhoads, of Cedar Rapids; Carol Murphy and her husband Steve, of Georgetown, Texas; Dennis Astor and friend Bev Davis, of Cedar Rapids; and Janis McMann and her husband Larry, of Cedar Rapids. When in college at Westmar, Jeff met the love of his life, his wife, Jane Astor. They were married May 24, 1980. Jeff and Jane had two children, Jacqueline Lavely and husband Nate, of Iowa City, as well as Jacob Astor, of Boone. On April 6, 2015, Jeff became a grandpa to his first and only grandson Edward Alan Lavely. Jeff fell in love, doting on his grandson and spoiling him with affection. Jeff was an avid athletic fan, a loyal Hawkeye and Chicago Bears supporter. Jeff enjoyed walking his dog Blue and letting him swim in the pond. Throughout his life, he spent a lot of his leisurely time fishing. Jeff retired from Rockwell Collins where he worked as an auditor. Cremation services will be handled privately by Claire Brothers Funeral Home in Houston, Texas. There was a public visitation Monday, Jan. 11, followed by a Memorial Service at The United Methodist Church in North Liberty.
