Incumbents survive NL City Council elections

Hoffman, Harrington and Smith retain their seats, Wayson returns

NORTH LIBERTY– Tuesday, Nov. 5, was a good day to be an incumbent on the ballot for North Liberty as all three current council members running survived reelection bids against two challengers for four-year terms. Chris Hoffman, RaQuishia Harrington and Brent Smith fended off Matthew Eckhardt and Michael Nicholls to retain their seats. Harrington and Smith are in first terms with the council, after Harrington won a special election in March to fill the vacancy left by Jim Sayre and Smith was appointed by the council in May to replace Jennifer Goings.
Hoffman received 864 votes, or 78 percent, while Smith captured 819 (74 percent), and Harrington garnered 755 (68 percent). Eckhardt received 652 votes, 59 percent, while Nicholls captured 216 votes, 19 percent.
Brian Wayson, a previous council member, ran unopposed in a bid to return for an open two-year term, which expires Dec. 31, 2021, and received 992 votes, 98 percent. There were 20 write-in ballots cast.
