IOWA CITY– With the Iowa State Fair postponed until the 2021 fair season, organizers put on the Iowa State Fair Special Edition– a livestock show for Iowa’s youth. The livestock show was for 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) members only, with livestock nominated by May 15, to be shown at the Iowa State Fair.
Grant Haman, son of Jon and Laurie Haman, showed in purebred Angus Heifer at the Iowa State Fair Special Edition in the FFA Breeding Beef Division. Haman has been involved with the Clear Creek Amana’s FFA Chapter since it started in 2018. Haman is the first ever Clear Creek Amana FFA member to exhibit at the Iowa State Fair Special Edition FFA Show. Haman and his heifer earned a purple ribbon at the fair. At the Iowa State Fair Special Edition FFA show, a purple ribbon is the highest rating, followed by blue, red and white. Haman’s heifer is part of his supervised agricultural experience (SAE). An SAE is a project and experiential learning activities allowing the student to develop foundational career components. The basic components include, but are not limited to, career exploration, employability skills and college readiness, personal financial management, workplace safety, agricultural literacy and basic knowledge of the agricultural industry.
Haman purchased his heifer in January and spent countless hours feeding her, maintaining her coat condition and exercising her. Being a breeding heifer, Haman will take her back to his farm and add her to his herd. It's Haman’s hope he will be able to show her prodigy sometime again at the Iowa State Fair Special Edition FFA Breeding Beef Show. Haman graduated high school this spring and is fortunate enough to be able to maintain his FFA membership until he is 21. FFA is a dynamic youth organization making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. All Clear Creek Amana High School students are encouraged to learn more about the local FFA Chapter.
