George Carl Bortz

George Carl Bortz, 96, of Solon, died Friday, June 16, 2017, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Celebration of Life Services were held Tuesday, June 20, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Visitation was Monday, June 19, at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
George was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Homestead, the son of Adam and Marie (Miller) Bortz. He married Loretta Lingel on Aug. 10, 1949, in Cedar Rapids. He began working at the age of 15 at the Amana Society Farms, where he hand-milked cows, tended to hogs, installed fencing and picked corn. George and Loretta lived in the Solon area where they farmed for many years. He also worked for local farmers in his early years, Wilson Packing and was on a road construction crew for a few years. His passion was farming, as well he enjoyed playing cards, and being with his family.
George is survived by his daughter Nancy (Bob) Welsh of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Patti Schott of Lisbon; his brother Willard Bortz of Cedar Rapids; his brother-in-law Wilbur “Bud” Lingel, and special family members Malinda and David Poduska, and Ambrose Poduska of Lowden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Loretta, son Gary Bortz and a sister Vernice (Walter) Fruendt, and his sisters-in-law Maxine Bortz and Doris Lingel.
