Creek Boys come up short against Tigers

Grinnell takes 2nd in District 6 with 31-24 win over CCA

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) closed out the shortened football regular season at 4-3 overall, and 3-2 in Class 3A District 6 with a 31-24 loss to the Grinnell Tigers Friday, Oct. 9, at home on Senior Night.
The Tigers racked up a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and despite a pair of Clipper touchdowns in the second, led 17-14 at halftime. The Creek Boys picked up a safety in the third, but Grinnell added another touchdown for a 24-16 advantage going into the fourth quarter. The Clippers and Tigers each scored in the final 12 minutes, with a two-point conversion for CCA, and an extra-point kick for the Tigers for the 31-24 final.
Ryan Navara, a senior, scored one touchdown and the two-point conversion while fellow seniors Alex “Fig” Figueroa and Tom Johnson also found the end zone with one score apiece. Anthony Hennes, a senior, went 2-2 in point-after kicks. “Fig” led the ground war for the Clippers with 133 yards on 32 carries, while Navara carried the ball 21 times for 116 yards. Johnson led in receptions with four catches for 48 yards while senior Brock Reade had three for 38.
Hennes led defensively with 11 tackles and two assists while senior Nate Beckman had eight tackles, four assists and one quarterback sack in the contest.
Seniors Johnson, Riley Wolfe, Figueroa, Navara, Mason Stanfield, Harrison Cory, Jacob Curtin, Randal Mosier, Tanner Webb, Tyler Hansen, Ryan Detert, Joey Lepire, Wes Quinlan, Mark Gorbatenko, Aaron Feinberg, T.J. Bollers and Treyton Bickel were recognized in a pre-game event.
The Creek Boys finished third in District 6 behind undefeated Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic and Grinnell, and will face the Marion Indians in the first round of the 2020 Class 3A Playoffs on Friday, Oct. 16, at home at 7 p.m. The Indians finished the regular season at 2-4 overall, and 1-4 in District 4 (Davenport Assumption Catholic, Central DeWitt, North Scott, Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, Marion and Clinton). The winner will face Xavier in the second round on Friday, Oct. 23. Pairings for the third round and quarterfinals, on Friday, Oct. 30, and Friday, Nov. 6, will be determined at that time. The 2020 semifinals and championship game will be held at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls with the semifinals scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 12, through Saturday, Nov. 14, and the championships (all classes) taking place Thursday, Nov. 19, and Friday, Nov. 20.
