SOLON– You’ll have about a month of varsity baseball and softball.
The abbreviated season will pick up where it would have been if a global pandemic had not wiped out months of competitive high school sports.
The Spartans and Lady Spartans both open with doubleheaders Monday, June 15, on the road at Manchester against the West Delaware Hawks, and both make their home debut Wednesday, June 17.
The baseball junior varsity squad will start things off at home at 5 p.m. hosting Fairfield, with a varsity game against the Trojans at 7 p.m. On the other side of Racine Avenue from the Solon Recreation and Nature Area, Center Point-Urbana will be facing the Lady Spartans in a doubleheader with a 6 p.m. start.
On Wednesday, May 20, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the summer sports season could proceed and approved the reopening of school facilities beginning on Monday, June 1.
In response, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) and Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) issued a joint statement stating the first contests may begin on Monday, June 15.
The WaMaC Conference met Wednesday, May 27, and decided to play out the original schedule, with a few extra dates added, especially in softball.
The conference will not have a champion in baseball or softball for 2020, although the WaMaC will name All-Conference teams.
The postseason begins with softball regional games on Monday, July 13, and the 2020 state championships are set for Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, at Rogers Sports Complex, in Fort Dodge. Baseball’s postseason starts up on Thursday, July 9, with the state championships taking place Friday, July 24, through Saturday, Aug. 1, at Principal Park, in Des Moines.
On Tuesday, May 26, the IHSAA and IGHSAU released “Guidance and FAQs” for baseball and softball in line with guidelines set forth by the Governor’s Office, the Iowa Department of Education (DoE), and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH).
Per the guidelines, players and coaches should have their temperature checked at home prior to attending practice or a game, if their temperature reading is 100.3 or above, they should not attend. Likewise, spectators should also have their temperature taken at home and remain at home if it is 100.3 or higher.
DoE and IDPH guidelines state schools must limit the use of bleachers for fans, and encourage fans to bring their own chairs, or stand practicing social distancing between families.
Masks, per the IDPH and DoE, are not required for players, umpires, coaches or spectators.
Concession stands are not permitted to be open this season.
