Solon takes two from CPU Three wins in a row for Spartans

SOLON– The bats came alive against the Stormin’ Pointers.
Solon High School’s varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader from Center Point-Urbana (CPU) 10-1 and 13-3 at home June 18.
The Spartan pitchers allowed only four hits and a single earned run in the opener, while Solon’s offense knocked 14 hits, including three doubles.
The Spartans put up two runs in the bottom of the first, but broke open the game with six in the fourth inning, sandwiched by single runs in the third and fifth.
Senior Cole Arduser went 4-4 at the plate, scoring three times and earning an RBI. Sophomore Kinnick Pusteoska and senior Nolan Pattison had a double and three RBI each, while senior Carson Shive was 2-3 with two RBI. Solon averaged .452 against CPU pitching.
Meanwhile, junior Drew Turner was strong on the mound, allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven and walking four over five innings. Junior Will Noonan and senior Mathieux Rehnke each threw a single inning of scoreless relief, with Rehnke striking out two batters.
The Spartans notched their third consecutive win in the nightcap.
Solon jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the end of one, but the Pointers jumped back into it with two runs in the top of the second against starting pitcher Jake Van Roeckel.
The Spartans responded with a run in the home half of the second, but CPU cut the lead back to two with another score in the top of the third.
But that was the last of the Stormin’ Pointer offense.
The remainder of the game belonged to Solon, which rattled off eight runs over three innings (with five runs in the sixth) to secure the 13-3 win.
The Spartans had only six hits, but drew 15 walks off the CPU pitchers.
Incoming freshman Brett White had a triple and two walks, scoring three times, while junior Brady Jeworrek had a single, a double and three RBI. Arduser, Pusteoska and junior Jackson Ryan had the team’s other hits.
Van Roeckel worked three innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out four and walking six. Junior Jacob Smith had two strikeouts and a walk while not allowing a hit over three innings of relief.
