Lady Spartans on a six-game tear Solon sweeps home opener against CPU

SOLON– There’s nothing like home cooking.
After dropping the first two games of a condensed season at West Delaware June 15, Solon High School’s varsity softball team returned to the friendly confines at home and promptly erased the opening day memory with six straight double-digit wins.
The Lady Spartans opened the home stand with a doubleheader against Center Point-Urbana (CPU) June 17, rolling up 11-1 and 12-0 victories. On Friday, June 19, Solon swept Maquoketa 15-3 and 10-0, and at a weekend triangular Saturday, June 20, the Lady Spartans lapped Union Community 12-2 and Durant 12-0.

Spartans topple Fairfield in home opener Solon begins season with split at West Delaware

SOLON– Fans welcomed Solon’s varsity baseball team back to the diamond June 17 for a home opener against the Fairfield Trojans.
The Spartans made the most of six hits and five walks for a 9-3 win.
The victory moved Solon to 2-1 after starting the season with a doubleheader split with West Delaware June 15.
Junior Brayden Rickertson threw 4 1/3 innings on the mound, giving up four hits and two unearned runs while striking out four and walking three. Senior Sully Steen pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up an unearned run and a hit.

CCA’s Cheyaenne Bunch charts a new college course

HOMESTEAD– She’ll get to keep blue and white in her wardrobe.
Clear Creek Amana High School (CCA) senior Cheyaenne Bunch changed her college plans, opting to remain closer to home. Bunch initially signed a letter of intent to play volleyball with Concordia University, in Seward, Neb., back in November. Concordia is a Lutheran college in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Great Plains Athletic Conference and the Bulldogs went 23-6 last season.

CCA’s TJ Bollers commits to play football for Wisconsin

TIFFIN– Herky the Hawk has one more reason to shake his fist at Bucky Badger starting in the fall of 2021.
Clear Creek Amana High School (CCA) standout student-athlete TJ Bollers ended a lengthy search for a collegiate home, with suitors wooing him from across the country, to continue playing football with a video announcement on Twitter, released Thursday, June 11.
Bollers, a senior at CCA this fall, announced his intent to attend the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, where he will pursue a degree in engineering along with gridiron success.

CCA softball starts the season at the earliest possible moment

OXFORD– The Creek Girls couldn’t wait any longer.
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School softball team started the 2020 season at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, June 1, the first day of practice per the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), the Governor’s Office, the Iowa Deptartment of Education and the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Liberty baseball brings back just about everybody for 2020

NORTH LIBERTY– The Bolts’ diamond was finished last year, but not in time for Coach Tom Cronk and his crew to play on it.
After two seasons of being full-time road warriors, with “home” games played at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, the Liberty High Lightning will finally get to play on their own diamond on Liberty’s campus in North Liberty.

Baseball, softball prepare to play with COVID guidelines Fans to be allowed at games

SOLON– There will be no handshakes after the game.
It’s one of the many changes Solon Community School District (SCSD) fans and players can expect in order to provide the safest environment possible while still playing baseball and softball in the summer of 2020.
But fans of both will be allowed to watch games as the truncated season kicks off June 15.
“We are allowing fans to attend games,” SCSD Activities Director Casey Hack confirmed. “We are encouraging social distancing and asking our fans, players, and coaches to follow these guidelines.”

NORTH LIBERTY– The schedules for the 2020 high school baseball and softball seasons were released by the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) and WaMaC Conference, and set the stage for a short campaign for the Liberty High Lightning and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers.
On Wednesday, May 20, Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the summer sports season could proceed and approved the reopening of school facilities beginning on Monday, June 1.

SOLON– You’ll have about a month of varsity baseball and softball.
The abbreviated season will pick up where it would have been if a global pandemic had not wiped out months of competitive high school sports.
The Spartans and Lady Spartans both open with doubleheaders Monday, June 15, on the road at Manchester against the West Delaware Hawks, and both make their home debut Wednesday, June 17.

Galpin to lead Spartan hoops program

SOLON¬– Jared Galpin has been hired as the next Solon High School Head Boys Basketball Coach.
Galpin was officially approved by members of the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education at a May 21 meeting at a salary of $5,048.
His selection was announced by SCSD Activities Director Casey Hack.
