Girls win Gruber Relays

1-2 finish in long jump, Troyer reaches shot put goal

SOLON– In a cold, wet track season with five cancelled meets early, you want reasonable weather, and a win, for your big home meet. Mission accomplished for Solon’s girls.
With wins in six events and runner-up points in eight more, Solon outdistanced the eight-school field with 164.5 points at the Denny Gruber Relays, April 17. Mount Vernon, with 107.5, was second. North Cedar had 77 for third. Marion (70), Vinton-Shellsburg (49), Davenport Assumption (46), Dyersville Beckman (44) and Iowa City Regina (27) filled out the field.

Girls sending a crowd to the Drake Relays

SOLON– High School track in Iowa has two season highlights. As with other sports, there is the state championship– May 17-19 this year. But this weekend, the Drake Relays spotlights international, college and high school athletes showing their stuff in a track showcase with a century of tradition.
To qualify for Drake, Iowa high schoolers compete against the entire state, not just their school’s enrollment class, for the limited events offered. Solon descends on Drake’s Blue Oval with five relay teams and four individuals.

Solon boys 3rd at Denny Gruber

Linderbaum, Krutzfeldt, Ira, throwers relay and shuttle hurdle relay team 1st, Flansburg, Kober and 4x100 2nd, 800m sprint medley 3rd

SOLON– Coach Mark Sovers and his coaching staff always make the Denny Gruber Coed Relays exciting and this year, held at Spartan Stadium on Tuesday, April 17, was no different.
Marion championed the team podium with 108 points, Mount Vernon captured second with 104 team points and Solon finished the evening in the bronze podium position with a score of 97 team points. The rest of the field was occupied by Vinton-Shellsburg (93), Beckman (60), Regina (52), North Cedar (50) and Davenport Assumption (24).

Spartans roll over Raiders

Solon boys run away with 6-1 win over Anamosa April 20

SOLON– Halfway through the first period, it looked like a close match against one-win Anamosa.
Down 2-0, the Raiders scored a goal to slash the lead in half.
But then the Solon boys responded.
The Spartan defense clamped down, and the offense methodically moved back into Anamosa territory and tacked on two more goals in the closing moments of the half for a 4-1 lead.
Senior goalie Ryan Sears, relieving senior Eric Weetman, pitched a shut-out in the second period, Solon tacked on two more goals and ran away with a 6-1 victory April 20 at Spartan Stadium.

Tearful defeat for girls in Anamosa

ANAMOSA– The Lady Spartans came out swinging following the 5-0 loss to Muscatine the day before, but the Raiders stolen it in overtime, 4-3, at the Anamosa High School football field on Friday, April 20.

Lady Spartans put it together against West Delaware, 4-0

SOLON– The Lady Spartans put together an offensive and defensive stand to triumph over the West Delaware Hawks, 4-0, at Spartan Stadium on Monday, April 16.
As Coach John Tucker prognosticated following the first game of the season, when the Lady Spartans can put together the offense and lean on their defense, success would be the result.

Solon soccer girls fall in Muscatine, 5-0

MUSCATINE– The facility at the Muscatine Soccer Complex hid a grass field not quite embraced by the season smattered with uneven spots and grass beginning to feel the warm caress of the 50-degree day.
Grass fields have proved to be the Lady Spartans’ Achilles heal this season, and following the bumping and elbowing while jockeying for position the results on grass proved the same as the Lady Spartans fell prey to the Muscatine Muskies, 5-0, on Thursday, April 19.

7th Annual Spartan Dash April 28

SOLON– The Lakeview Elementary PTO will be hosting its seventh annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 28, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as the Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should signs up to participate in the event with a “family team.” Family teams will walk, skip or run through obstacles set up along the 1-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA). Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.

2018 spring football final

Hawk Talk

Last Friday at Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeye football team had a controlled scrimmage to wrap up spring ball.
I think I’ve talked about this before, but I’m not a fan of Friday night spring scrimmages. I really enjoy Saturday afternoon for ending spring practice.
There was an announced attendance of 9,300 which was a little high, I thought.
Also the media gets to sit in the press box and I would rather be on the field.
When I’m in the press box, it’s like you are watching the games from the moon.

Spring football wrap 2018

Hawk Talk

This is the final segment of a three-part series about spring football for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
This week, I’ll look at the quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs and special teams.
Nate Stanley has a chance to be one of the really good quarterbacks to play at Iowa. I’m not going to say great quarterback until he has two good seasons in a row.
First, look at his size. Stanley came to Iowa listed at 6-4, 212-pounds. In the spring football guide, he is up to 242-pounds.
That is a big dude playing quarterback.

Ladies 3rd at Jesse Day Relays

Drake Relays deadline is Friday

By Joe Wilkinson
Special to the Economist
DAVENPORT– Iowa’s spring track season has been cold and gray so far. So, temperatures in the low 60s felt like a tropical breeze wafting across the track as the April 12 Jesse Day Relays began in Davenport. By the time Solon’s girls notched first in the meet-ending 4x400-meter relay, though, raw cold had returned.
