Wave of the future? Kind of confusing

Girls 2nd, boys 4th at divided Bob Brown Invitational

IOWA CITY– Solon’s girls finished second, with the boys cross country teams taking fourth, in a revamped version of Regina’s Bob Brown Invitational Cross Country meet, Sept. 3.
Trouble is… they only ran directly against about half the runners there.

Lady Spartans come from behind against Linn-Mar, Marshalltown

Solon starts season battling bigger schools

SOLON– Solon’s varsity volleyball team is putting it together.
The Lady Spartans collected wins over Marshalltown, Cedar Rapids Washington and Linn-Mar while facing a bevy of larger schools during a varsity round robin tourney Sept. 5.
Solon swept the Warriors of CR Wash 2-0, and galloped back for 2-1 wins over Marshalltown’s Bobcats and the Lions of Linn-Mar, 2-1.
The Lady Spartans also suffered losses at the hands of No. 8 (4A) Waverly-Shell Rock (2-0), Dubuque Senior (2-1) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy (2-1) to move to 3-4 on the young season.

Demons haunt Spartans

Spartans unable to exorcise Demons in 33-18 loss

SOLON – The Washington Demons haunted the Solon Spartans football team for 48 minutes of football for a 33-18 win on Friday, Sept. 4, during Armed Forces Night at Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, stopping Washington on its first drive and then Solon was stopped on its first drive, iterating the strength of both teams’ defenses from the onset.
Washington drew first blood and went up 7-0 with a little less than four minutes remaining in the first quarter.

Creek Boys come up one point short against Panthers

Mount Pleasant edges past CCA 28-27 in season opener

MOUNT PLEASANT– In a week that saw the start of classes with half the time spent in the classroom and half the time spent online (and a day of 100 percent online learning), and with the prospect of no student section for home games, there was a glimpse of normalcy for Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School.
As Andy Griffith said in 1953, “What it was, was football.”
The Clippers opened the 2020 season with a non-district contest in Mount Pleasant and came up just a little bit short of victory as the Panthers won, 28-27.

Creek girls and Creek boys 4th at Anamosa August XC meet

Haidyn and Brandon Barker lead the way for CCA

ANAMOSA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls and boys cross country teams both finished fourth Saturday, Aug. 29, in a season-opening meet in Anamosa.
Haidyn Barker, a sophomore, was sixth overall in the varsity race, and the first Clipper across the finish line while big brother Brandon, a senior, won the varsity boys race in 16:32.5.
Mid-Praire won both varsity contests with Muscatine (boys) and Williamsburg (girls) the runner-ups. CCA rival Solon was third in both races.

Bolts struggle against Trojans

Iowa City West wins season-opener against Liberty High, 27-0

NORTH LIBERTY– Cheerleaders cheered, a small pep band (socially distanced in the stands and with cloth covers over the bells of their horns) performed, and the football teams did gridiron war Friday, Aug. 28, as the Iowa City West High Trojans invaded the Liberty Lightning.
But there were no spectators inside the stadium.
As part of the Iowa City Community School District’s COVID-19 mitigation strategies, spectators were not allowed in (they instead gathered on top of vehicles in the parking lots and stood along the fence surrounding the stadium).

Brandon McCarty awarded scholarship

CCA grad selected for Iowa PGA Foundation’s Charlie Burkart Scholarship

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty native and Clear Creek Amana High School graduate Brandon McCarty was selected as the 2020 Charlie Burkart Scholarship honoree by the Iowa PGA Foundation.
“I am very honored and appreciative that I was selected as the 2020 Charlie Burkhart Scholarship winner. This award will be a tremendous help as I continue my academic and golf career at the next level,” McCarty said.

Trojan-Bolts dunk Dubuque’s Mustangs

IC West-Liberty High girls open 2020 swimming season with home win over Hempstead

CORALVILLE– The combined Iowa City West High and Liberty High “Trojan-Bolts” picked right up where they left off last year, staying undefeated in the Coralville Recreation Center’s pool Tuesday, Aug. 25, with a dual meet win over Dubuque Hempstead.
The Trojan-Bolts’ junior varsity (JV) squad won, 143-21, with the varsity winning, 151-35.

Boys, girls each run 3rd, in cross country season kickoff

ANAMOSA– Same meet… different look, as Solon’s cross country teams opened the 2020 season. Usually held in midseason, the Anamosa Invitational was first on the calendar this year. It ushered in a new look, as COVID-19 precautions meant different training, team transportation, meet preparation, social distancing on the course and masks on many– certainly not all– spectators in the Aug. 29 meet.

Spartans fall to Raiders, 17-14

A field goal thwarts Spartan victory in season opener

SOLON– The Solon Spartan varsity football team took their first dip in Class 2A waters against the Williamsburg Raiders on Friday, Aug. 28, and found it fraught with competition as a season-opening win was stolen from it courtesy of a 20-yard field goal with 1:35 remaining, in the fourth quarter, by Williamsburg Raider junior Alex Marovets for a 17-14 victory over the Spartans. It was the Raiders’ first win over Solon since 2011.
The kick that delivered the Raider win was a cherry on a 10-unanswered-point sundae Williamsburg put together in a six-minute rally late in the game.

Lady Spartans reload

Former players join Walker as VB coach

SOLON– The Lady Spartans lost two of their top weapons from 2019, but still have a lot of experienced players coming back for first-year Head Coach Jeff Walker.
Solon’s varsity volleyball team opened the season Aug. 27 with a 2-0 loss against Center Point-Urbana at a relocated triangular meet in Mount Vernon.
The Stormin’ Pointers took a close 27-25 victory in the first game and then cruised to a 25-15 win in the second. No stats were available for Solon.

Clipper football focuses on the present ahead of an uncertain season

2020 Clear Creek Amana varsity football preview

TIFFIN– Student athletes, their families and coaches watched as the 2020 spring sports season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis.
They held a collective breath as summer baseball and softball were allowed to proceed, albeit in a shortened season, which did see some teams benched due to positive infection testing.
With the green light from the state and the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), there will be a 2020 high school football season. As with the summer sports however, it will look a little different.
