Solon Public Library

Library book sale cancelled

Due to scheduling issues, the Friends of the Solon Library will not be having a used book sale on Saturday, Aug 2, as previously announced.
A new date has not yet been selected. Donations are down, so organizers may not have enough material for a sale until Spring 2015.
Announcement of the new sale dates will be on the library’s website (www.solon.lib.ia.us) and on Facebook.

New library display window to feature Monet’s Garden

“These landscapes of water and reflections have become an obsession… I hope that something will come of all my efforts.” –Claude Monet, 1908.

SOLON– This spring the Solon Public Library’s display window takes us to France– 40 miles northwest of Paris, to visit Giverny, the home and garden of the great painter, Claude Monet. Described as the most visited garden in the world, this beautiful setting was the subject of many of Monet’s paintings, including his water lilies, featured in our display.

NL receives green light to move east

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty has been given the green light to expand its boundaries.
The state’s City Development Board voted unanimously to approve North Liberty’s application to annex a total of 567.7 acres on the city’s current southeast side.
The city received voluntary annexation petitions from property owners last fall, and North Liberty officials were poised to grant them, due to the anticipated new Iowa City school district high school to be built in that area.

Blues train arrives later this year

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s the same hot party with the same cool vibe.
It’s just happening a little later this year.
The North Liberty Blues & BBQ festival planners held a press conference last week to announce the event’s lineup and activities, with its biggest changes being the move away from its traditional Memorial Day weekend date, and a brand new location.
This year’s festival is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, from noon until 10 p.m., and will be held in Centennial Park near the corner of Jones Boulevard and St. Andrews Drive in North Liberty.

CCA to reduce district tax levy

OXFORD– The board of directors for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) community school district approved the certified budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year as well as Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) and School Improvement Local Option tax (SILO) budgets.

Grace Community Church to host women’s conference May 2-3

NORTH LIBERTY– Grace Community Church (North Liberty) will host a two day women’s conference, Uncomfortable Grace: The Hope of Jesus in the Midst of Adversity on May 2 and 3. The conference will occur Friday evening from 6:30 until 9 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The featured speaker will be Sarah Stevenson, formerly of Revive Our Hearts, and currently the Women’s Ministry Director at Cornerstone Church in Ames. The conference will include worship, testimonials, food, fellowship, and dynamic teaching.

TIFFIN– The annual Clear Creek Amana Community Clean-up Day will be held Friday, May 2. At this time Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School students from the Student Assistance Team and Win with Wellness will volunteer their day to help older community members with yard work, windows, small household chores and general spring cleaning.

Be somebody extraordinary… help local firefighter give back

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Fire Department is holding a blood drive in support of Bob Parker on Monday, May 5, starting at 3:30 p.m. at the North Liberty Fire Department located at 25 W. Cherry St.
Volunteer firefighter Parker has served the North Liberty community as a firefighter and first responder for over 40 years. He has gotten up in the middle of many nights and snow storms to help people on some of their worst days. However, on March 7, 2012, Bob had one of those bad days himself; he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

West, City high schools to host workshop on discussing drugs with children April 29

IOWA CITY– The West High and City High PSTOs are hosting a special event, “Beginning the Conversation:  Discussing Drug Use with your Children,” at City High Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. in the City High Commons.
All parents and guardians of high school and junior high school students are invited to attend. A panel of local experts will discuss the most effective strategies for talking with children about drugs.

Tiffin mayor helps raise awareness of elderly hunger issues

IOWA CITY– For many elderly people, a hot meal can be difficult to come by.
That’s why Elder Services, Inc., (ESI) of Iowa City, has been delivering meals to Johnson County homebound residents through its Meals on Wheels program since 1980. To raise awareness of senior hunger and nutrition issues, ESI participated in March for Meals, a national campaign held last month initiated by the Meals on Wheels Association of America.

SOLON– It’s safe to say the Solon Community School District (SCSD) is approaching the starting gate in the race toward a possible September bond issue.
With a $25 million spending target and conceptual plans for a new performing arts center and middle school in hand, the members of the Solon school board met with architects last week to continue the groundwork for significant facilities projects.
