CCA students build a needed wheelchair ramp

TIFFIN Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School students enrolled in the Architectural, Construction, and Engineering of Eastern Iowa (ACE) program with Industrial Tech Teacher Steve Clark constantly seek out real world projects to hone their skills and gain valuable experience. In early October, they had the opportunity to do a good deed while learning their trade.
It was an outstanding experience for our kids, Middle School Principal Brad Fox said. They, in one day, built a wheelchair accessible ramp for a community member.

Two incumbents stay with two newcomers

IOWA CITY– Incumbents Paul Roesler and Shawn Eyestone retained seats on the Iowa City Community School District’s school board in the Tuesday, Nov. 5, city and school elections. Four seats were up for seven candidates on the ballot.
Roesler netted 70 percent of the votes, 5,548, while Eyestone garnered 60 percent, 4,762. Newcomer Lisa C. Williams was the big winner with 5,869 votes, or 74 percent. Newcomer Charlie Eastham captured 4,959 votes, or 62 percent, for a seat.

NORTH LIBERTY– Tuesday, Nov. 5, was a good day to be an incumbent on the ballot for North Liberty as all three current council members running survived reelection bids against two challengers for four-year terms. Chris Hoffman, RaQuishia Harrington and Brent Smith fended off Matthew Eckhardt and Michael Nicholls to retain their seats. Harrington and Smith are in first terms with the council, after Harrington won a special election in March to fill the vacancy left by Jim Sayre and Smith was appointed by the council in May to replace Jennifer Goings.

Haunted Happenings fill NL’s Rec Center with Halloween family fun

NORTH LIBERTY– For two evenings, part of the North Liberty Recreation Center was turned into a hall of Halloween havoc as the City of North Liberty and the North Liberty Optimist Club sponsored their annual Haunted Happenings. Families took part in a variety of Halloween-themed games and activities on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 24 and 25.
Set up for the event started on Monday, Oct. 21, and wrapped up at 5 p.m. on Thursday, an hour-and-a-half before the doors opened. Between 300-500 kids and their parents/grandparents/guardians were expected each night.

Courage Ride raises $100,000 for Sarcoma Cancer Research at the University of Iowa

IOWA CITY– Courage Ride, a bicycle ride raising funds for Sarcoma Cancer research, presented a check for $100,000 to the University of Iowa’s Sarcoma Research Program during an Oct. 23 ceremony at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Ben Millr and Dr. Munir Tanas accepted the check on behalf of the center’s Sarcoma Cancer Research Program.
Over the past 15 years, Courage Ride has raised over $610,000 for Sarcoma Cancer research– having a major impact on cancer patients and families who benefit from the research.

SOLON– There will be at least one new face on the Solon school board in 2020.
There are six candidates for two open four-year terms on the Solon Community School District Board of Education and current Board Member Jim Hauer is not in the race.
Incumbent Adam Haluska is joined on the ballot Lauren O'Neil, Carlos Ortega, Jennifer Stahle, Seth Wear and Jami Wolf for the Tuesday, Nov. 5, general election, the first to combine city and school contests since a change adopted by the Iowa Legislature in 2017. City and school elections will now be combined in November of odd-numbered years.

Five candidates running for Tiffin City Council

TIFFIN– Five candidates are on the Tuesday, Nov. 5, ballot for Tiffin City Council as incumbent Peggy Upton, Melissa Arey, Christine Olney, Lexi Rector and Rodney Walls will battle for two, four-year terms.
Tiffin residents will also see a library levy on the ballot. If passed (50 percent required), the Tiffin Public Library Support Levy would increase from .10 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation to .27 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation, “for the purpose of offsetting general fund expenses for the City of Tiffin’s annual operating budget.” Collection would begin on July 1, 2020.
