Evans places 5th at state wrestling

DES MOINES– People who do not know Solon 195-pound wrestler Lance Evans would have given him little chance of even qualifying for this year’s state wrestling meet, let alone placing in the tournament.
He sustained a severe knee injury this past summer, which required surgery, and was only cleared to start practicing during the week prior to the sectional tournament.
Evans went on to win both sectional and district championships in qualifying for the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines and won four matches, bringing home a fifth-place medal.
His match results were as follows:

Spartans aiming for state tournament

Solon heading for showdown with Keokuk (?) Thursday

SOLON– It’s one down, two to go for the Solon varsity boys basketball team.
The Spartans eliminated Washington from the playoff picture Monday night, 58-40, setting up a Thursday meeting with either Fairfield or Keokuk at Washington for the District 10 championship in Class 3A.
The winners of District 9 and District 10 will meet Monday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in Substate 5 for a chance to go to the state basketball tournament in Des Moines.
Solon blew the game open, but it didn’t happen until the second half.

City hall pricing goes through roof

Early pricing for concept plan causes sticker shock for Solon officials

SOLON– After a bout with sticker shock, it’s back to the drawing board for Solon’s proposed new city hall.
Early conceptual cost estimates for the renovation of 100 W. Main St. came in at nearly three times the amount the city expected to spend, according to city administrator Cassandra Lippincott.
That was a month ago, and now the city committee which has been working on the project has asked the engineering firm it hired to try to trim back the projected price tag.

Legion fish fries begin this week through March 29

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will hold its famous Friday night fish fries Feb. 15 through March 29, from 5 until 7:30 p.m. at the legion. They will be serving Alaskan pike, and shrimp will be offered on Feb. 15, March 8 and March 29.
For $9 Adults and $4 Children (ages 5 through 12), dinner includes: fish, coleslaw, potato, bread, dessert and beverage. Children under 5 eat free. Carry outs also available.

Senior Advocates seek community input on purchase of new van

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates want to replace their aging 10 passenger van with a larger 25 passenger bus. In order to justify the purchase and attendant expenses, the group feels it should be available to various community organizations and groups. It will be necessary to schedule fee-based usage from others in addition to the Advocate’s senior trips in order to justify the purchase.

Solon Community Pantry taking private appointments

SOLON– The Solon Community Pantry is now taking private appointments to better accommodate families. Appointments can be made Mondays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. in 30 minute allotments. The pantry, located in the lower level of the Solon United Methodist Church, is very private and volunteers work with confidentiality and discretion. The pantry receives Table-to-Table items early each Monday morning that include packaged sandwiches, salads, milk, juice, yogurt, vegetables and fruits. Produce from several other sources is also available as well as non-perishable items.

Old Gold Diner to host Solon fourth graders Feb. 20

SOLON– Old Gold Dining will be hosting a fourth grade class on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
There are usually 22 students that come, and organizers would like to have at least one senior citizen for each student. Non-seniors are also welcome with a reservation and a payment of $5 for the meal. Please try to join this fun occasion and visit with these young Solon school students. Call 624-2251 before noon the day before to make reservations. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., so plan to arrive by 11:15 a.m. The class that is scheduled to come this month is 4A.

Last-second foul dooms Lady Spartans at Beckman

DYERSVILLE– It apparently wasn’t meant to be.
The basketball gods conspired against the Lady Spartans last week in their season finale, snatching away a winning season with a 53-52 loss against Beckman on the road at Dyersville.
“I have watched the end of the game probably 15 times and can just shake my head,” noted Solon head coach Tony Nicol.
Solon’s girls held a 1-point lead with 8.1 seconds on the clock after the two teams had battled neck and neck in the second half.

Three close, exciting wins for boys

SOLON– Three tough games.
Three points difference.
Three great wins.
The Solon boys took the best shots Beckman, West Branch and Williamsburg could give, and left the court standing each time last week.
The Spartans went to the wire in each game (and overtime against West Branch), winning by 3 points in each contest with eerily similar scores.
Solon defeated Beckman 48-45 in the last home game of the regular season last Tuesday (Feb. 5), then went on the road for back-to-back games at West Branch (50-47 OT) and Williamsburg (48-45).

Three to state meet

Lance Evans, Louis Gnida and Logan Linderbaum advance

SOLON– The Solon wrestling team advanced all three of its district qualifiers to the state tournament to be held later this week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The trio consisting of 113-pounder Louis Gnida, 195-pounder Lance Evans, and heavyweight Logan Linderbaum had a near-perfect day, combining to win five of the six matches they wrestled.
Gnida took first place in impressive fashion, winning by decision 8-1 in his first match, before pinning his opponent in the finals.

Local cats get scattin’

California vocal artist drops by for bebop vocal sessions

SOLON– Bringing the American tradition of jazz to the center stage of the Solon high school, Kerry Marsh sat in for a couple sessions with vocal groups at Solon High on Friday, Jan. 11.
Marsh was in Iowa for several dates, including at Waukee and Pleasant Valley (North Scott) high schools.
Talking music history and driving out cool sounds from his own voice box instrument, Marsh played piano and led the clinic with his own jazz improvisation, singing “scat” style (think Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway or Mel Torme).

Solon library closing for upgrade Feb. 8

New features, more interaction with new circulation software

SOLON– It’s time for an upgrade.
The Solon Public Library will be closed Friday, Feb. 8, to allow for training on a new software system that will streamline and update the library experience for patrons and staff.
The current circulation and management software programming is almost a decade old, more like a century in terms of recent technology advances, and its replacement will provide a host of options.
“We’ve got a lot to learn yet,” library director Kris Brown said Friday. “I think overall it will be easier and users can interact more with it.”
