Health and Wellness Fair Sunday, Feb. 2

SOLON– A Solon Community Health and Wellness Fair will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Solon Community Center. The event is free to the public.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial traveling wall coming to Solon?

Council approves $3,000 of $7,000 tab

SOLON– A traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial may be coming to Solon in August.
Scott Rozinek, a member of the Solon American Legion, approached the Solon City Council for partial funding of the proposal at a Jan. 22 meeting.
Council members agreed to fund a $3,000 down-payment.
The total cost, Rozinek said, would be $6,000, plus lodging for a driver and any other associated local expenses.
Rozinek told city representatives he had previously assisted in the displaying of a Vietnam traveling memorial wall in West Branch.

Ed Hadenfeldt home tourney canceled

CEDAR RAPIDS– It’s been a frustrating couple of weekends for Solon’s varsity wrestlers.
The Prairie City-Monroe tournament scheduled for Jan. 11 was canceled due to winter weather, and then the forecast did not look good heading into the weekend of Solon’s home Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational Jan. 18.

Lady Spartans squeak out 46-42 win over West Delaware

First road win of 2020

MANCHESTER– The Lady Spartans squeaked out a four-point road victory, 46-42, over the West Delaware Hawks for their first travel triumph of 2020 on Monday, Jan. 13, in Manchester.
The varsity girls’ basketball matchup was postponed from Friday, Jan. 10.
It was a dead heat for both teams at the end of the first quarter, knotted at 11-all. The Hawks put up another 11 points to Solon’s four in the second quarter for a 22-15 lead at the half.
Solon bested West Delaware, 14-10, in the third quarter, cutting the Hawks’ lead to 32-29 to start the final period.

Hayden Taylor nominated for 2020 Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestler of the Year

Fans can vote through Feb. 7

BOONE– Hayden Taylor of Solon is among a handful of Iowa high school wrestlers nominated for the Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestler of the Year Awards.
Fans have the ability to vote, once per day, for their top wrestler in each category until Feb. 7, when votes will be tallied from IWCOA and the fan vote to reach the top three. The finalists will be invited to IAWrestle’s premier event War at the West Gym, on March 14, held on the University of Northern Iowa campus, where a winner will be announced in each category prior to the event.

Solon boys break six-game skid

Spartans down Maquoketa. 68-39

SOLON– It was good to get a win.
After dropping the previous two games by a combined four points, Solon’s varsity boys’ basketball team blew out the Maquoketa Cardinals for a 68-39 home victory Jan. 16.
Despite playing in the Solon Middle School, the Spartans tore the game open in the third quarter, turning a 10-point halftime margin into a 22-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
“I loved how our guys responded to getting challenged,” noted Head Coach Matt Lesan.
This time, Solon took a 19-11 first-quarter lead and didn’t look back.

Bolts fall to Muskies and Trojans in double dual meet

Avalos wins by fall for Liberty High

IOWA CITY– The Liberty High wrestlers visited Iowa City West High Thursday, Jan. 16, for a double dual meet with the Trojans and Muskies of Muscatine, and ended up 0-2 in varsity competition.
The Muskies knocked off the Lightning, 72-6, in varsity action with Liberty’s Gabe Avalos pinning Collin Zellmer in 5:52 at 113 pounds. The Bolts picked up a junior varsity (JV) win, 12-5, as Austin Franklin pinned Trevan Phelps in 2:00 at 152 pounds and Jackson Tubbs won his 138-pound match by pinning C.J. Palmer in 51 seconds.

Nate Beckman wins twice for CCA in quad meet

INDEPENDENCE– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) wrestlers traveled to Independence on Thursday, Jan. 16, for a quad meet with the host Mustangs, Waterloo East, and Beckman Catholic, from Dyersville, and ended the night 1-2.
The Creek Boys knocked off the Trojans of Waterloo East, 54-24, in a 10-forfeit match. Jayden Massey picked up a win at 120 pounds by pinning East’s Ryan Strong in 1:39.

8th-ranked Tigers devour Bolts

Liberty girls fall, 73-19, to Cedar Falls

NORTH LIBERTY– It was another rough night for the Bolts as the eighth-ranked in Class 5A Cedar Falls Tigers mauled them, 73-19, at home, on Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Liberty boys fall 63-51 to Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS– The Liberty High varsity boys’ basketball team dipped to 5-3 after a 63-51 loss to the Cedar Falls Tigers Tuesday, Jan. 14, in Cedar Falls. The Lightning trailed the Tigers, 14-11, at the end of the first quarter and were down, 32-18, at halftime. The Bolts fought back in the second half with a 13-point effort in the third period but still trailed Cedar Falls, 45-31, going into the fourth. Liberty cut the gap to six points with three minutes remaining and outscored the Tigers 21-18 in the final period, but, as Head Coach Stu Ordman said, “Too many turnovers for Bolts.”
