CAT grant makes a splash (pad)

No pump and dump for Solon Work delayed until final plans approved

SOLON– Solon’s splash pad should be cooling off kids next summer.
The site at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA) has been prepped and is ready to roll, and the city is only waiting on final approval of its plans by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
The water amenity has been delayed by a change in the original plan, explained Public Works Director Scott Kleppe.
“What threw a wrench into this for the most part was the recirculation, recycling of the water,” he said.

Unique public forum highlights the best of North Liberty, and offers suggestions for the future

NORTH LIBERTY– What is so special about living in North Liberty? What would make living in North Liberty more enjoyable? How can a smalltown feel be maintained in an ever-growing community? What would help North Liberty be a more progressive community in the future?
Eight presenters, sometimes solo, sometimes in pairs, and even in a small group, took center stage on Tuesday, July 30, at the Tin Roost restaurant in North Liberty for a unique event called SPARK North Liberty to present their answers and vision.

“East of Middle West” begins filming in Solon 1990s vehicles and extras needed this month

SOLON– “We’ve got some scenes that we’re going to need a bunch of extras,” noted Bill “Ginks” Ginkens.
Ginkens, of rural Solon, spent much of his summer as location scout for “East of Middle West,” a feature film written and produced by University of Iowa (UI) graduate Mokotsi Rukundo and directed by Brian Lucke Anderson.
The independent film was scheduled to film at various locations in and around the Solon area from Thursday, Aug. 8, through the end of the month.

Schrock and Klosterman earn All-District Softball honors

Iowa Girls High School Coaches Assn. picks the best across the state

DES MOINES– Two Leader-area student athletes were recognized by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) with All-District Softball honors. Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Ainsley Schrock, and Liberty High School’s Brylee Klosterman were named to the IGCA’s 2019 Class 4A Northeast All District list, released on Tuesday, July 23.

Liberty High baseball falls 7-5 to West Des Moines Valley in 4A substate semifinal

CEDAR RAPIDS– The first season of Mississippi Valley Division play, and the second season of varsity competition, ended for Liberty High’s baseball team Monday, July 22, at home (Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids) in a Class 4A substate semifinal against the Tigers of Valley High School from West Des Moines. The Tigers topped the Lightning 7-5 to advance to the substate final against West Des Moines Dowling Catholic on Wednesday, July 24. The Tigers fell 5-3 to the Maroons, who advanced to the state tournament.

Six Lady Spartans earn All-Conference softball honors

SOLON– Senior outfielder Taylor Ryan and junior pitcher Kayla West received First Team all-conference honors for Solon’s varsity softball program.
The WaMaC Conference issued its East Division All-Conference Softball Teams Tuesday, July 16, with a total of six Lady Spartans listed.
Senior catcher Skyler Stookey and incoming ninth grader Hilary Wilson were named to the Second Team.
Senior Taylor Moore and sophomore Monet Barnhouse received Honorable Mention.

Five Spartans earn WaMaC All-Conference Baseball honors

McSweeney, Miller named to First Team

SOLON– Five Solon varsity baseball players were singled out for WaMaC East Division All-Conference honors released Wednesday, July 24.
Senior Chris McSweeney and junior Cam Miller each were unanimous selections for the First Team, while senior Adam Bock was named to the Second Team.
Juniors Jax Flynn and Lucas Walker received Honorable Mention.

Season ends in Marion

Spartans fall one game short of state

MARION– A narrow loss to the Marion Indians ended the season for the Solon varsity baseball team July 24.
Marion came through with a bases-loaded, game-winning single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie, advancing the Indians to the state tournament in Des Moines with a 2-1 win.
The Spartans retired with a record of 22-18, just two days after a 3-2 upset win over Oskaloosa in the Class 3A Substate 6 District 12 final July 20.

SWISHER– The community of Swisher held its annual Fun Days celebration Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27, with fair skies and sunshine Friday evening, and a post-parade downpour on Saturday.

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Fair showcased the future of agriculture as 4H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) kids showed their livestock and other projects during the fair, which ran from Friday, July 19, through Wednesday, July 24, at the fairgrounds in Iowa City.
