West/Liberty swimmers dominate in Dubuque

Liberty’s Martin, Klein, Reese and Janik help lead Iowa City West past Dubuque Hempstead

DUBUQUE– The combined team of Iowa City West High and Liberty High swimmers dominated the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs on Monday, Sept. 9, at Loras College, in Dubuque. The varsity team won, 145-40, while the junior varsity (JV) won, 142-24.

Barker leads Creek Boys to perfect finish in Fairfield

Barker, Zillyette, Sexton, Alcorn and O’Connor sweep top five spots

FAIRFIELD– Despite heat, humidity and threat of strong to severe storms, Thursday, Sept. 12, was a perfect night for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School varsity boys cross country team as they competed in Fairfield’s meet. The Clippers swept the meet posting the top five finishes to win the team championship decisively.
Brandon Barker won the varsity boys’ race in 16:53.08, with Gavin Zillyette the runner up in 17:24.39. Jack Sexton, Caleb Alcorn, and Nick O’Connor rounded out the third-, fourth-, and fifth-place finishes for the Creek Boys.

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity football team suffered its first loss of the 2019 season Friday, Sept. 13, under a full moon at home as the visiting Demons from Washington (Iowa) defeated the Lightning, 38-31.

NL council makes dog park’s name official

Red Fern Dog Park invokes a love of dogs, nature and literature

NORTH LIBERTY– The long-awaited dog park in North Liberty has an official name. The park, scheduled to open next summer on 11.5 acres of land along North Liberty Road, has been known simply as, “the Dog Park.” The North Liberty City Council, on a 3-0 vote, approved “Red Fern Dog Park” as the park’s name.

Local solar company, now in seven states, makes case to legislators

NORTH LIBERTY– The power of the sun was on display for state legislators at the North Liberty Public Works campus Aug. 14.
Members of the Iowa Future Caucus, a bipartisan coalition of millennial lawmakers, visited one of the city’s solar arrays and listened to concerns from Moxie: America’s Solar Company representatives regarding the state’s approach to renewable energies.
Moxie and the City of North Liberty partnered on a series of solar arrays to power municipal buildings in 2016.

Boys move up to fifth at Benton’s ‘Run through the woods’

ATKINS– The pack is running a little tighter as Solon’s boys near the halfway mark in the 2019 cross country season. Fourth early last week at Tipton, they followed with fifth place Saturday, Sept. 14, at the 10-team Benton Invitational.
Two Spartans cracked the top 20, with all seven varsity runners in the top 47. Sophomore Gabe Hinman grabbed medalist honors again, with a third-place individual finish, after a strong start over the wooded course through Atkins Nature Trail.

Lady Spartans fall to Mount Vernon

Girls rebound at Vinton quad, Linn-Mar tourney

SOLON– There was a chance in the first game, but it slipped away.
The Mount Vernon Mustangs, ranked first in Class 3A at the time, swept the Solon volleyball team at home Sept. 10.
The Mustangs dropped the Lady Spartans 25-23, 25-17, 25-14.
Solon kept pace with Mount Vernon in the first game, closing to within two points and a single point at 24-23 before the final Mustang kill put the Lady Spartans away.
Solon found itself in a 1-6 and then a 2-10 hole in game two, but clawed back within five before falling.

Defense pitches shut out, holds Indians to 100 yards

MARION As the Spartans varsity football team traveled to Thomas Park in Marion on Friday, Sept. 13, the machine shed mantra south of Solon begged the players, Send em to the Spirit World.
Solons own version of the Young Guns did not disappoint, trampling the Indians, 44-0, in nearly a spiritual manner.
Solons scoring began early, during the first possession, with 9:51 remaining in the first quarter. Cam Miller sprinted up the middle behind solid blocking for 11 yards and a score. Cael ONeill kicked the extra point and Solon was up, 7-0.

IOWA CITY– Former Johnson County Supervisor Pat Harney didn’t mince his words when he described the sections of a proposed Unified Development Ordinances relating to agriculture.

Hoover Trail coming together

All but Ely Road underpass done this year

SOLON– It’s close.
Oh, so close.
The Hoover Trail link between Solon and Ely will be mostly filled in yet this year, with only the Ely Road underpass to construct in 2020.
A gravel, at-grade crossing is in place at the underpass site north of 140th Street providing access to the entire trail, according to Brad Friedhof, program manager for the Johnson County Conservation Board.
But there are still small stretches of concrete to pour between Polk Avenue and Ely Road along Highway 382 near Solon.
