Mini-tree auction

The friends of the library would like to thank all of the individuals and groups who decorated trees to enter in the contest this year. Thanks also to the panel of judges (Rhonda Miller, Margo Redlinger and Kathy Kaldenberg) and to all those who bid on the trees.

LearningExpress upgrade

The latest version of LearningExpress Library, the powerful online learning resource for academic and career development, is now available on the library website. Version 3.0 features a new tutorial and test-preparation platform, with easier access to skill-building resources and new features designed to help students and adults prepare for success in school and in life. Centers– a collection of related materials organized around a theme or classification of user including school (grades 4-12), college, GED® test prep, college preparation, career, adult learning, and recursos para Hispanhoblantes (Spanish) centers– make it easier for adults and students to locate the resources they need when they need it. Patrons can search and access tutorials before signing into and downloading content to their secure personalized portfolios, “My Center.”
New test features include both timed and untimed practice modes which help students and adults prepare for a wide range of academic exams– such as the GED® test, COOP, HSPT®, SAT*, ACT®, AP*, PSAT/NMSQT*, ACCUPLACER®, ASSET®, and COMPASS®, career certification tests such as NCLEX-RN®, Praxis I® and II®, and more, and build skills in math, reading, writing and basic sciences.
Tests, tutorials or ebooks accessed on LearningExpress Library 2.0 will not be transferred over to Version 3.0. However, Version 2.0 will continue to be active for a few months to allow users to finish any previously accessed items. LearningExpress Library 2.0. Users will need to set up a new user account in Version 3.0. Stop by the library or visit our website (www.solon.lib.ia.us) to learn how you can have online access to these beneficial learning resources for work and school– anytime, anywhere.

Holiday hours

The library will be open from noon until 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve (Tuesday, Dec. 31) and closed on New Year’s Day (Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014). Regular hours will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2, when the library opens at noon.

Storytime on holiday break

Storytime will not be held next week due to the New Year’s holiday. Storytime will resume on Jan. 7, 2014, with a new schedule of stories, songs, rhymes and crafts with Carey.

Exercise DVDs

Need a little variety in your living room exercise routine? The library is adding several new DVDs that feature walking routines, perfect for indoor exercise. If you have any exercise DVDs that you are no longer using, please consider donating them to the library.

2014 calendar notes

Feb. 1, 2014, will be the next friends of the library semi-annual used book sale. Also remember that the first Monday of every month is the popular Lego® Club, so why not mark all those dates on your calendar right now?
