CEDAR RAPIDS– It’s been a frustrating couple of weekends for Solon’s varsity wrestlers.
The Prairie City-Monroe tournament scheduled for Jan. 11 was canceled due to winter weather, and then the forecast did not look good heading into the weekend of Solon’s home Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational Jan. 18.
“We tried to hold out as long as we could, but most of the teams dropped and it didn’t make sense to try and have it in the weather conditions that we had,” explained Head Coach Blake Williams. “It is unfortunate to lose two weekend tournaments in a row. The wrestlers lost probably eight-10 matches over those two weekends. That adds up to a pretty big percentage of total matches for the season.”
Fortunately, the Spartans were able to slide into the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk Invitational, postponed to Monday, Jan. 20, and came home in sixth place.
Hayden Taylor (145 pounds) and Jax Flynn (170) were individual champions for Solon, while Zeb Gnida (152) was runner-up.
Pleasant Valley captured the team title with 194.5 points, comfortably ahead of Dubuque Hempstead (175) and Cedar Falls (163.5). Iowa City City High (153.5) edged out Fort Madison (148.5) for fourth place, and Solon was right behind with 141.
Taylor remained undefeated for the year, pinning his first two opponents before taking an 11-4 decision against C.J. Walrather of Burlington Notre Dame in the semifinal. Taylor earned a 17-2 technical fall over North Cedar’s Brody Hawtrey in the championship match.
A bye and a medical forfeit placed Flynn in the semifinals, where he took a 15-3 major decision over Jayden Angle of Boone. Flynn met Muscatine’s Tim Nimley in the final, winning with a 12-4 major decision.
Gnida reached the 152-pound final with two pins and a technical fall, but lost by fall late in the title match to Eli Loyd of Pleasant Valley.
Gage Marty finished third for Solon at 195 pounds. Marty lost a 13-8 decision in his semifinal, but battled back with a pin against McGuire Bryant of Boone (0:35). He pinned Adam Ward of Dubuque Hempstead (1:39) to win his third-place match.
Johnny Hoyle (132) and Lucas TePoel (160) placed fifth, Kaden Lamm (120) was seventh and Erich Karsten eighth to round out the Solon scoring.
It was still a busy weekend for the Spartan wrestling program, Williams noted.
The Solon Wrestling Club hosted its youth wrestling tournament Sunday with 325 wrestlers participating (92 of them from Solon). The program also hosted the Solon Junior Varsity Tournament Monday with over 300 wrestlers, he said.
The varsity wrestlers return to the mat for Senior Night in a home double dual Thursday, Jan. 23, against Mount Vernon and Marion beginning at 6 p.m.
“We have had great crowds at our home meets,” Williams said. “I would like to thank the fans for coming out and cheering us on. I hope to see another great crowd Thursday as we recognize our senior wrestlers and managers.”
The Spartans head to Ida Grove for a weekend tournament Friday, Jan. 24, and finish the regular season at a double dual at Benton Community Thursday, Jan. 30.
