Wrestlers 4th at WaMaC

Taylor, Gnida take titles, Marty 2nd

MANCHESTER– It was a solid showing.
Solon’s varsity wrestlers came in fourth at the 14-team WaMaC Conference Tournament in Manchester Feb. 1.
Hayden Taylor (145 pounds) and Zeb Gnida (152) brought home first-place finishes, with Gage Marty (195) taking runner-up.
“I thought overall our guys wrestled well and fought hard throughout the tournament,” noted Solon Head Coach Blake Williams. “We placed 10 out of the 11 wrestlers we brought, which was good for our team points. Being only 10-15 points out of second place without having three weights shows how tough our guys wrestled. This is a great step as we now transition into the postseason.”
Perennial powers held court, and host West Delaware walked away with the conference title with 301 points.
Williamsburg (175.5) and Independence (173.5) were neck and neck for second and third, with Solon (160.5) well ahead of fifth-place Beckman Catholic (126).
Taylor and Gnida continued to be Solon’s one-two punch.
Continuing his unbeaten streak, Taylor pinned Central DeWitt’s Jeff Fuller in the quarterfinals (1:11), earned a technical fall over Kam Royster of Williamsburg and held West Delaware’s Jadyn Peyton at bay for a 3-2 decision in the final.
“Hayden won his second conference crown in as many years,” Williams said. “After dominating his first two opponents, he wrestled tough, winning 3-2 over the fourth-ranked wrestler in his weight. Hayden wrestled a smart match and was in control throughout even though the score was close.”
Gnida “dominated his bracket” with three technical falls, the coach continued.
Gnida defeated Thomas McAllister of Marion (20-4), Kyle Cole of West Delaware (18-2) and Garrett Arp of South Tama (16-1) in the first-place match to earn the 152 title.
“When Zeb wrestles with confidence he is tough to beat,” Williams added.
Marty’s only loss came in the championship against Wyatt Voelker of West Delaware, the top-ranked wrestler at 195, Williams said.
“Gage has come a long way since last year. Going from wrestling junior varsity last year as a freshman to wrestling in the conference finals this year shows the amount of improvement he has made. This is a result of hard work and a great attitude.”
Marty won by technical fall over Korver Hupke of Independence in the quarterfinal and earned a 9-1 major decision against Maquoketa’s Lane Stender in the semifinal before losing the 19-7 major decision to Voelker.
Adding to the Spartans’ score were Jax Flynn (170) and Seamus Poynton (182) with third-place finishes, and Caleb Ebert (160) with fourth.
Both Poynton and Flynn rebounded from semifinal losses.
“Jax had a gutsy performance in the toughest bracket in the tournament, which included four of the top five wrestlers in the state,” Williams reported. “After losing a heartbreaker in the semis to the No. 2-ranked wrestler, Jax fought back and got two falls including one over the No. 1-ranked wrestler from Indee. He did all this without practicing all week due to an illness. That is the type of kid Jax is: he is tough kid who doesn’t use excuses. Once he gets healthy, he will be right there with anyone.”
Flynn pinned Clear Creek Amana’s Mark Cabrera (1:22) and took a 7-2 decision from Nick Marovets of Williamsburg before a sudden victory loss to Maquoketa’s Abraham Michel.
Flynn went on to pin South Tama’s Brayden Smith (1:34) and Cole Davis of Independence (2:47).
Poynton lost a 1-0 semifinal to West Delaware’s Jack Neuhaus, but pinned Marcus Beatty of Independence (1:37) in the consolation bracket and earned a 2-1 decision over Austin Roos of Benton Community in the third-place match.
“It shows a lot about someone (like Seamus and Jax), how they react and overcome a tough loss with two wins to finish third,” Williams said. “Many wrestlers cannot overcome such tough losses. This shows a lot about their character.”
Ebert lost a 12-11 decision to Marion’s Ben Gibson in the third-place match at 160 pounds after pinning his first opponent and taking a major decision in the consolation bracket.
Nash Altman (285) finished sixth, while Erich Karsten (220) was seventh for the Spartans. Jakobe Lahr (126) and Ethan Swan (138) finished eighth.
“I thought Ethan wrestled well collecting three wins on the day,” Williams said. “He avenged a loss to the Benton Community wrestler he lost to on Thursday night.”
Solon begins the postseason with a varsity sectional meet at Fairfield Saturday, Feb. 8. The top two teams from each sectional site qualify for regional duals and the top two individuals at each weight class move on to district competition.
