Women of Troy top City High on UI courts

IOWA CITY– Senior night for Iowa City West High’s Abby Jans was made all the sweeter as the Women of Troy defeated their crosstown rivals, the Little Hawks of City High, 6-3, on Tuesday, May 2, at the University of Iowa’s tennis courts.
West Coach Amie Villarini noted it was the first win for West High against City since the first round of state competition in 2013. The win also boosted West’s record to 11-1 overall.
Jans, Kaily Speer, Jessica Moonjely and Vivian Mitchell picked up individual wins, while Emma Koch/Jans and Speer/Moonjely were victorious in doubles matches.
“I’m happy for our team to pull off a long-awaited victory over our rival team,” Villarini said.  “And I’m really happy for our senior Abby Jans to finally get her first win over City High in her final season at West!” Jans was the runner-up at state coed doubles her freshman year with Trent Schneider, won regionals her sophomore year with her sister Megan and was seventh at state. She played number two in singles her junior year and earned First Team All-Conference honors. As of the City High match, Jans was undefeated in singles play.
“City is a strong team and they gave us a respectable run,” Villarini said. “We may see them again for the regional finals to qualify for team state.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy visits West High on Thursday, May 11, for a 4:30 p.m. match and West will host regionals on Saturday, May 13, Thursday, May 18, and Saturday, May 20, with all matches starting at 9 a.m. The regional final is set for Monday, May 22, at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center (1309 8th St. SW) in Cedar Rapids at 3 p.m.
