William D. “Bill” Upmeyer

William D. “Bill” Upmeyer, 91, of Maquoketa, passed away on Wednesday evening, June 15, 2016, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa.
A celebration of Bill’s life was held Monday, June 20, at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Visitation was Sunday, June 19, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Graveside services and burial were held Monday at Oakland Cemetery, Solon.
William David Upmeyer was born on Oct. 22, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, to Paul William and Dorthea Carol (Bolte) Upmeyer. He was raised in Solon and graduated from Solon High School and then attended the University of Iowa earning a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He married his college sweetheart, Audrey Lenz of Freeport, Ill., on Nov. 5, 1949, in Freeport. To this union, three children were born: David, Cathryn and Steven.
Bill had received his professional license in engineering and land surveying. He worked for the highway commission for 20 years where he was the resident construction engineer for 10 of those years. He was the Jackson County Engineer for 18 years, retiring in 1986. Upon retirement, he continued doing land surveying for 10 years. 
Bill was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, and a former member of the Maquoketa Lions Club where he had served as a past-president. He was a member of the Society of Land Surveyors of Iowa, past-president of the Iowa County Engineer’s Association, and received the Outstanding County Engineer Achievement Award in 1985.
Bill enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing and gardening. Most importantly, he loved spending time with his family. 
Those left to honor Bill’s memory include his wife Audrey Upmeyer of Maquoketa; children, David (Peg) Upmeyer of Grosse Pointe, Mich., Cathryn (William) Rickard of Smyrna, N.Y., and Steven (Jane) Upmeyer of Tell City, Ind.; four granddaughters, Julie Upmeyer, Dianne (Shawn) Larson, Amy (Josh) Smith, and Staci Upmeyer; a great-granddaughter, Meredith Jane Smith; brother-in-law James Lenz and wife Susanne; one niece and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Paul William.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa, First Lutheran Church, or to the William and Audrey Upmeyer Family Scholarship Fund (through the Community Foundation of Jackson County).
