NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity volleyball team swept Clear Creek Amana (CCA) 3-0 in a non-conference match up Thursday, Oct. 3, at Liberty High. The Lightning, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union in its Thursday, Oct. 3, rankings, improved to 21-1 while the Clippers, unranked in Class 4A, dipped to 13-8.
The Lightning, AKA the “Bolts,” took the first set 25-16. Liberty’s LeeAnn Potter tied the set 3-3 with a kill while teammate Cassidy Hartmann tied the set 6-6. The Lightning pulled away soon after building a 13-8 lead with a kill from Sydney Woods. The Clippers’ Calia Clubb slammed a kill to narrow the gap 14-11 in favor of Liberty while a Potter ace serve made it 20-15. Hailey Hested put up set point for the Bolts.
The Creek Girls took a 4-2 lead in set two with a pair of kills from Hailey Pollock, but Liberty crept back, tied 4-4 with a Hested ace serve, and took a 9-6 lead. The “Boats” kept the set close alternating between trailing by one point, and tying before the Bolts took the lead for good at 13-12 on their way to a 25-17 win.
The Lightning jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set with kills from Woods, Hartmann and Potter. A Hartman ace made it 11-4 for Liberty, but the Clippers rallied back with an ace from Carsyn Gallagher making it an 11-11 tie. Pollock produced a kill for the Clippers making it 15-15, and added two more for a 17-16 deficit and a 17-17 tie. A block by Pollock gave the Creek Girls a 19-18 lead, and yet another Pollock kill made it 20-18. Sophomore Morgan Etscheidt gave the Clippers hope as she made back-to-back kills for a 22-18 lead. However, the Lightning struck with a kill by Shelby Kimm cutting the gap to 22-20. Another Liberty kill tied the set at 22-22, and a Clipper attack error made it 23-22 for the Bolts. Hartmann scored to make it 24-22, while Pollock tipped the ball over the net for a point and a 24-23 deficit for the Clippers. Liberty took set and match point with a 25-23 final score.
Hartmann and Pollock led Liberty and CCA with 11 kills apiece.
