IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans put up three touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back, as they powered past the Muscatine Muskies 51-3 Friday, Sept. 1, at home in a non-district matchup.
The Muskies took the opening kick off, but fumbled on their first drive, leading to a recovery by West High’s Andre White and the first of two touchdowns from Traevis Buchanan. Josh Jasek’s extra point kick was good, and West was up 7-0 with 9:51 remaining in the first period.
Evan Flitz connected with Buchanan for his second touchdown with 2:34 left in the period. Lucas Karwal booted the extra point for a 14-0 lead. Dillon Doyle scored with four seconds left in the first period on a 16-yard pass reception from Flitz. Again Karwal nailed the point-after kick and the Trojans led 21-0 going into the second quarter.
The Trojan defense forced the Muskies into a field goal attempt early in the second period. The successful kick put Muscatine on the scoreboard with 10:36 left in the half. The Muskie’s ensuing kickoff resulted in Andre White scampering 90 yards to score. Karwal’s kick was good and the Trojans went up 28-3 with 10:22 left in the half.
Trumell Roberts scored on a 19-yard run to make it 34-3, and Karwal’s good kick made it 35-3. The Trojans picked up a safety with 4:50 left in the half to go up 37-3 and Jalen Gaudet closed out the half with a 76-yard run to score after taking a pass from Flitz. Karwal’s kick was good and the Trojans headed for the locker room with a commanding 44-3 lead.
Dylan Miene made a 1-yard dive into the end zone in the third quarter to put the Trojans up 50-3 as the continuous clock shortened Muscatine’s misery. Again, Karwall knocked the ball through the uprights and West’s lead increased to 51-3.
The win improved the Trojans’ record to 2-0, while the Muskies dropped to 0-2 after also falling in week one, 50-6, to Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Paul Breitbach led the Trojans’ ground attack with 14 carries for 51 yards, Roberts had five carries for 50 yards, White made seven carries for 49 yards and Brennon Keen went 27 yards on five carries. Flitz completed nine of 11 passes for 209 yards, with Buchanan taking five of them for 108 yards while Gaudet took three for 92 yards.
The Trojans head for the UNI-Dome Friday, Sept. 8, to take on the Cedar Falls Tigers at 7:15 p.m. The Tigers are 2-0 after defeating Fort Dodge, 55-7, and Ames, 65-7.
