Spartans capture fourth at Ruth Ahrens Invitational track meet

 MARENGO– The Solon boys varsity track team improved their showing behind solid scoring performances from underclassmen. Tuesday, April 11, the gear was loaded on the bus and the team trekked to Iowa Valley High School in Marengo for the Ruth Ahrens Invitational, a trek that would post one of the best team performances to date.
When the competitions were complete, Solon posted a fourth place showing at the meet scoring a solid 74.5 team points for their performance. Vinton-Shellsburg championed the meet with a score of 163 team points followed by Benton (145) and Williamsburg (88), Solon (74.5), Regina (66), Clear Creek Amana (26), and Alburnett (22.5).
Hunter Kula scored four of the team points for his 5th-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 12.06, Jake Coons grabbed bronze honors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.24, adding six more team points while Kendrick Harris captured 5th-place with a time of 24.95 and another team point, and Graeson Dall made his season debut and a long awaited return from injury to battle to a second place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.08 grabbing eight team points for the Spartans. Luke Ira grabbed a silver place showing in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.32, good for another eight team points; and in the 400-meter hurdles, Thomas Brandt scored six team points for the Spartans with his third-place, 1:02.57 time.
“Graeson (Dall) has been feeling better and more confident in practice and felt Always strong in the throwing events, Solon grabbed seven team points from the tandem of Jake Coons, with a throw of 133-05, and Luke Schaeckenbach, with a throw of 121-06, good for six and one team point respectively. Continuing their hurling prowess in the shot put were Coal Flansburg with a second-place toss of 51-03.50, good for eight team points, and Rocky Lensing with a throw of 43-04.00, good for another team point.
In the high jump, AJ Coons posted eight points to Solon’s team total with a leap of 5-10, and in the long jump, the pair of Payton Herdliska and Ryan Geistkemper finished fifth and sixth respectively, earning two and one team points for their leaps of 17-10 each.
In the relays, the Spartans continued to pad their team total. A sixth place showing in the 4x100 by the team of Bo Black, Storm Scott, Peyton Stahle, and Luke Ira netted another team point from their finish if 46.83 and a time of 3:52.48 garnered a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay for Kendrick Harris, Ryan Geistkemper, Jack Bell and Carl Richey, good for four more team points. The 440-meter shuttle hurdle relay team of Black, Brandt, AJ Coons and Ira collected four team points with their time of 1:07.07, good enough for fourth place. In the 1,600-meter distance medley relay, a time of 4:05.51 grabbed the fourth-place position for the team of Storm Scott, Peyton Stahle, Geistkemper and Richey, and padded the team score another six team points.
Coach Sovers was pleased with the evening’s successes. “I believe every meet we (are) putting together little things that, when together, give us an opportunity to experience the moment we want to experience at the end of the season. We showed some balance in our lineup by scoring in all areas of the track meet from field events to running events and finally the relays. AJ Coons had a (personal record) in the high jump, Luke Ira in the High Hurdles, (and) Hunter Kula in the 100m dash had a (personal record). It was nice to see our team contributing to the balance we hope for throughout our line-up,” he summarized.
With the Davenport North Co-Ed. Relays pending on Thursday, April 13, the fourth-place team showing at the Ruth Ahrens Invitational was a much needed confidence builder for the Spartans.
