CORALVILLE– Not bad for the first time out.
Solon High School’s fledgling Lady Spartan wrestling team entered the 2021 Iowa Wrestling Officials and Coaches Association (IWCOA)’s Girls State Wrestling Tournament Friday, Jan. 22, and Saturday, Jan. 23, at the new Xtream Arena in Coralville’s Iowa River Landing.
While none of the Lady Spartans placed, Solon finished 22nd out of 111 teams.
“Collectively, our nine girls won 17 matches, which was an awesome start for our first state tournament,” noted Girls’ Wrestling Head Coach Jake Munson. “We spent a lot of time on the leaderboard. We were in seventh place after the first round, and then 14th after the first day.”
Although Solon dropped in the finals, Munson was very happy with the team’s first official visit to the state tourney.
Seven girls posted wins and all nine competed well, he said.
The event, in its third year, saw 488 wrestlers from across the state compete. There were 82 participants in the tournament’s first year, with the number swelling to 350 athletes in 2020.
Waverly-Shell Rock hosted the first two and partnered with Iowa City West High and Iowa City High to host this year’s event. Waverly-Shell Rock defended its 2020 state title with 256.0 team points to easily take the team championship, followed by Humboldt with 119.0.
Solon ended the meet with 48.5 team points, just ahead of Ottumwa and right behind LeMars.
Other local team finishes included Anamosa (10th), Mid-Prairie (12th), Clear Creek Amana (15th) and Vinton-Shellsburg (18th).
“We were really pleased how we performed and where we ended up,” Munson reported. “It was great to have a venue like the Xtream Arena. It felt like a state tournament, eight mats out there. All the girls competing and being in an arena versus a high school really gave the feel of it that a state tournament deserves to have.”
Lauren Bevans had an exciting first-round match at 126 pounds, Munson said.
Bevans pinned Autum Henkel of Ridge View (6:39), then won a 3-2 decision over Kloe Schmidt of Cedar Falls.
“To be able to gut it through and win a big match like that and then come back 45 minutes later and win her next one is an impressive feat,” Munson added.
Cheyenne Mulford (120), Bella Feaker (120), Maddy Hoyle (120), Eleanor Gnida (126), Sydney Langenberg (132) and Addison Burden (132) delivered wins.
Mulford, Feaker, Hoyle, Langenberg and Burden scored pins.
Munson said the team was able to win a lot of third periods, earning come-from-behind victories– a testament to the girls’ mental toughness and conditioning.
“Really proud how they competed on a big stage like that,” he said. “We did not wrestle intimidated at all. We got after it.”
The team loses two wonderful leaders and fantastic seniors, Langenberg and Trinity Chapman, but the future of our program looks great, Munson added, with the rest of the girls planning to return next year.
Other students have indicated an interest, he said, and the program just announced a month-long middle school season.
Eight girls already signed up for the seventh and eighth grade session, which starts practice Feb. 8 and wrestles through March 5.
Munson hopes to have about 15 girls participate.
Solon High School offered a girls’ wrestling team for the first time in 2020. The season started Nov. 23 and concluded Feb. 1. The girls technically wrestle under the umbrella of the boys’ program, as the sport is not yet sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association serves as the governing body.
The response to girls’ wrestling reflects a trend all over Iowa, Munson added.
“Our girls have really made a lot of gains, but so have a lot of other programs,” he said, noting the amount of improvement across the board statewide compared to last year’s tournament in Waverly. “There’s a lot of programs going in the right direction and the state tournament’s getting more and more competitive.”
