Solon tests West Delaware

VB team picks up win against CR Jefferson

SOLON– The competition isn’t getting any softer for the Solon varsity volleyball squad.
The Spartans continued to battle ranked opponents last week, but came up winless at home against No. 8 (4A) West Delaware and on the road facing No. 3 (2A) Wilton.
Solon hosted perennial power West Delaware Sept. 15, and while the games were close (25-20, 25-23, 25-20) it still resulted in a 3-0 loss.
The Spartans then went 1-2 at a Clinton tournament Sept. 19, defeating Cedar Rapids Jefferson 2-1 before falling twice to Wilton’s Beavers by a 2-0 score.
Solon’s girls had a big crowd on hand to watch them face the Hawks at home, and the Spartans had their chances to steal a game. They rallied to within a point of West Delaware in the first game at 17-18, but gave up four straight points before falling.
Solon took an early 3-0 lead in game two thanks to a service error, a Maddie Manifold kill and a Kennedy Bombei serve, But the Hawks stormed back to take a 16-11 advantage.
Senior Katlyn Jeter’s block made it 17-13, and the Spartans tied the game at 18-all with Kennedy Bombei serving and Camryn Keith providing kills.
West Delaware edged ahead and Solon responded, knotting it at 22 on a pair of kills by sophomore Sophie Hoeper. The Hawks wrested the win away in the final points on a kill that dribbled over the net to drop, and a whistle on the Spartans.
Keith had eight of Solon’s 29 kills, while Hoeper and sophomore Delaney Bombei added six each; Manifold had five. The Spartan offense was efficient when they had their opportunities. It took the Hawks 100 swings to come up with 33 kills. Solon only had 49 kill attempts. Sophomore Katie Flynn had 10 assists, with Kennedy Bombei adding eight.
Jeter had four solo blocks to lead the defense. Junior Alexa Hupfeld and senior Stella Mesch each had 10 digs, while senior Sydney Langenberg added nine.
The Spartans gave away some points at the service stripe, successful on only 62.5 percent of serves. Kennedy Bombei was 16-17, however, and added three aces.
At Clinton Saturday, Solon started with the 2-1 win over Jefferson (21-18, 14-21, 15-6).
The offensive attack wasn’t as efficient, but the Spartans spread the ball around. The team came up with 19 kills on 47 attempts, led by Jeter and Delaney Bombei with five and Keith with four. Kennedy Bombei and Flynn each had nine assists.
Jeter had three of the team’s four blocks and Hupfeld (12) and Mesch (10) led the defensive backcourt in digs.
The Spartans were much sharper with their serves, putting them across at an 87.8 percent clip, led by Keith (14-14, ace), Kennedy Bombei (10-10, two aces) and Hupfeld (9-9).
Solon dropped both its matches with Wilton, but managed to make part of the second one closer.
The Beavers defeated the Spartans 21-12, 21-12 in the first meeting, but Solon made a go of it before falling 25-23, 25-13 in the second.
Five different players had three kills each in the second match: Manifold, Jeter, Delaney Bombei, Keith and Hoeper. Kennedy Bombei provided nine assists, with six from Flynn.
The Spartans moved to 7-12 on the season.
