Solon picks up wins at home quad

1-2 at Linn-Mar

SOLON– They bested Huskies and Tigers, but had trouble with Lions and Cougars.
Solon’s varsity volleyball squad went 2-1 at a home quad meet Sept. 10 and 1-2 at a Linn-Mar tourney Sept. 12. If you toss out the 3-0 sweep at the hands of the top-ranked (3A) Mount Vernon Mustangs to start the week, the team notched a .500 mark.
The Spartans stayed close with the No. 1 Mustangs in Mount Vernon, falling 25-18, 25-14 and 25-18.
“We did a good job of shutting down their big hitter, we just made too many mistakes,” observed Solon Head Coach Jeff Walker.
Junior Maddie Manifold led the team with six kills for the match, with nine assists for senior Kennedy Bombei and eight for sophomore Kylee Flynn.
Manifold, (five), senior Katlyn Jeter (four) and sophomore Delaney Bombei (three) accounted for 12 of Solon’s 13 blocks.
Junior Camryn Keith added two ace serves.
At the home quad meet later in the week, the Spartans pushed a talented Beckman Catholic team in a 2-0 loss, but then swept Vinton-Shellsburg and Oelwein, 2-0.
Solon started well against No. 5 (2A) Beckman and held an early lead in the first game before falling 25-21. The Spartans overcame an early deficit in the second game, but the Blazers came out on top, 27-25.
“As has been with us, we play well, then make mental mistakes, then come back but are down too many points,” Walker noted.
Keith led the squad with six kills, with Bombei and Flynn handing out eight and seven assists, respectively. Senior Stella Mesch had six digs, while Keith added two blocks. Flynn, Mesch and junior Alexa Hupfeld recorded aces.
Solon rebounded with wins over the Vikings and Huskies.
The Spartans prevailed over Vinton-Shellsburg, 25-17 and 25-18, and cruised to a 25-10, 25-14 victory over Oelwin later in the evening.
Solon racked up 29 kills against the Vikings, led by Manifold and Keith with six each. Jeter added five and Delaney Bombei four. Flynn and Kennedy Bombei had nine assists each. Mesch had seven digs to pace the team. Flynn, Mesch and Hupfeld again recorded aces.
Hupfeld and Kennedy Bombei had three aces each in the Oelwein win. Keith had seven kills to lead the team, with Manifold adding five. Kennedy Bombei had 10 assists, while Delaney Bombei had three blocks.
“We played very good in this match and got players in that sometimes don’t get in,” Walker stated. “It’s one of the complete games and how well we can become.”
At Linn-Mar over the weekend, the Lions avenged an earlier loss to the Spartans with a 2-0 sweep (21-16, 21-18).
Solon managed a lopsided 2-0 win against Tipton and then dropped a back-and-forth match against Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2-1.
Against the Tigers, Solon needed only 16 kills, with six provided by Keith, in the 21-8, 21-7 victory. The Spartans added points on nine aces, with two each from Flynn, Delaney Bombei and senior Payton Hassl.
Kennedy’s Cougars took a 21-11 first-game win, but Solon responded to take game two, 21-13. Kennedy moved ahead in the final set, 15-8. Flynn delivered three aces, and Delaney Bombei two. Hupfeld had six digs, while senior Sydney Langenberg, Keith and Kennedy Bombei added five.
Solon moved to 6-9 on the season.
