SOLON– In the Lady Spartans’ first of two home games of the week, on Tuesday, April 23, Solon dispatched the Maquoketa Cardinals, 2-0, to move to .500 on the season. The win was the second in a row for the Lady Spartans, who appear to be building momentum on offense cresting the halfway point of the season.
The Maquoketa Cardinals claimed nine shots, six of which were noted as on goal, according to Quikstatsiowa.com, led offensively by senior Sydney Taylor with four total shots for the team, three claimed on goal. Maquoketa’s keeper senior Abigail Diesing was credited with 80 minutes in front of the net and allowed only two goals, although the Lady Spartans spent a large portion of the game operating on the Cardinals’ end of the field.
Solon’s offense appeared on par with their defensive efforts during Tuesday’s game, communicating better, keeping the Cardinals on their heels. Junior Sylvia Havlicek led the Lady Spartans’ offensive production with five shots, two of which were on goal, one for score. Sophomore Stella Mesch had three shots with one on goal and sophomore Sydney Rissman had a shot made on goal for a score, as well. Haley Melchert also had a shot and was credited with an assist.
“The girls are improving offensively and starting to work better together up top,” Head Coach Amanda Paulson commented on the performance.
“I think our defender Haley Melchert did a great job offensively getting the ball up to our forwards against Maquoketa. Sylvia Havlicek and Sydney Rissman also had good performances, each getting a goal.”
Senior Presley Philipps served 80 minutes as keeper and recorded two saves as the last line of defense for the Lady Spartans.
Coach Paulson was quick to compliment Philipps on digging down deep and stepping in as keeper during the last few games following Brenna Gogel’s concussion. “Philipps did fantastic stepping in goal,” she said regarding the performances. “I attribute this all to her. This was not a position she wanted to play, but she never complained and definitely took one for the team!”
Defensively the girls are very supportive of one another, Paulson added. “Our back line does a great job covering one another. I always get nervous when the ball is in our final third, but our defense does a good job of keeping their composure.”
Solon hosts Center Point-Urbana on Tuesday, April 30, and Williamsburg on Thursday, May 2, on the home pitch in Spartan Stadium, both with 5:30 p.m. opening kicks, followed by a seven-day gap before a trip to Vinton-Shellsburg on Thursday, May 9, for a 5:30 p.m. kick. Saturday, May 11, the Lady Spartans travel to Waverly-Shell-Rock Senior High School for a tournament with game times to be determined, however tournament play commences at 9 a.m. Clear Creek Amana visits Spartan Stadium on Tuesday, May 14, for a 5:30 p.m. start, Solon visits Independence on Thursday, May 16, with a 5:30 p.m. kick and the regular season culminates at home for Solon on Tuesday, May 21, hosting Iowa City Regina at 4:30 p.m.
“The Saturday tournament in Waverly will be a tough day but the competition will be great for the team before going into postseason play,” Paulson commented.
