Solon advances six wrestlers to state tourney

Solon is sending six wrestlers to the state tournament after a strong showing at the Class 2A District 8 meet Feb. 15 in Washington. Hayden Taylor (145 pounds), Jax Flynn (170), Seamus Poynton (182) and Gage Marty (195) were all district champions. Zeb Gnida (152) and Caleb Ebert (160) each earned second place and a state berth.

The state meet is Feb. 20-22 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Class 2A opening round is scheduled for this afternoon (Thursday, Feb. 20).

Solon dominated the middle and upper weights, beginning with Taylor at 145 pounds.

Taylor won both his matches by major decision and continued his unbeaten streak this year. He downed Parker Terronez of Davenport Assumption in the first round and then beat Kaleb Nerem of Tipton 16-3 in the finals.

At 152, Gnida took second, falling to top seeded and undefeated Will Esmoil of West Liberty in the championship match. Gnida won his opener by a technical fall.

At 160, Caleb Ebert took second, losing by a 16-12 decision in the championship match to Camanche junior Cade Everson. Ebert won the second-place match by a 4-3 decision.

At 170, Flynn won his opener by technical fall, 16-1 and captured the district championship by pinning Assumption’s Logan Schmianksi in 1:38.

Poynton also won his championship match by fall, downing Dylan Jeffers of Keokuk in 1:30. Poynton won his 182-pound opener by fall in 3:53.

Marty captured the 195-pound district title with a 9-2 decision over Caden Hill of Davis County. Marty won his opener by an 8-1 decision.

Erich Karsten placed fourth in the 220-pound division at the district tournament, with a technical fall against Samuel Carrasco of Mount Pleasant in the third place match. Earlier in the tourney, he lost by fall to Kobe Simon of West Liberty.

Nash Altman of Solon lost in the 285-pound semifinal match-up by decision to Cole Miller of Central DeWitt. He placed fourth in districts, following a match against Seth Schurr of Columbus Community.
