Solon 5th at Fort Madison Invitational

Taylor, Gnida and Flynn take 1st

FORT MADISON– Powered by three individual champions, Solon’s varsity wrestlers placed fifth in the 18-team Fort Madison Invitational Dec. 20-21.
Hayden Taylor (145 pounds), Zeb Gnida (152) and Jax Flynn (170) provided 154 of the Spartans’ 374 points with first-place finishes.
Twelve Solon wrestlers earned points in the two-day tournament heading into the holiday break.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy took the team title with 487 points, with Dubuque Hempstead (421.5) and host Fort Madison (421) neck and neck for runner-up. New London edged Solon out of fourth place by seven points.
It was a new tournament for the Spartans, according to Head Coach Blake Williams.
“We were looking to see different competition,” he noted.
Similar in format to Independence, the tournament featured four-man round robin pools on Friday, with eight-man gold or silver brackets Saturday.
“It was a good tournament as most of the wrestlers got five-six matches,” Williams observed. “We were also able to bring a few extra wrestlers to get some varsity experience. I think all of the wrestlers won a couple of matches. I thought the team wrestled well for the most part. We were missing a couple of starters so to finish in the top five was a decent showing.”
In addition to the three individual championships, Solon’s Caleb Ebert took fourth place at 160 pounds in what Williams called a very competitive bracket, Kaden Lamm captured sixth and Lucas TePoel (182) and Gage Marty (220) each finished seventh.
“All three champs, I felt, dominated their brackets,” Williams said.
Taylor won a bracket with four ranked wrestlers in it, he reported, and was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler as voted on by coaches.
Gnida and Flynn won their titles with all technical falls or pins, he added.
Taylor pinned three of his first four opponents, and defeated the other opponent by technical fall. He took a 10-4 decision over C.J. Walrath of Burlington Notre Dame in the semifinal and a 7-3 decision in the title match with Dubuque Hempstead’s
Ben Faber.
Two pins and a medical forfeit propelled Gnida to a quarterfinal match against Max Mashek of Louisa-Muscatine. Gnida earned a technical fall over Mashek and did the same thing to Mason Schau of Fort Madison in the semifinal before pinning Kennedy’s Divion Ocheltree in the final (1:58).
After receiving a first-round bye, Flynn used a quick pin and a technical fall to reach the quarterfinals, where he won by fall over Burlington Notre Dame’s Bret Haubrich (1:41). Flynn pinned Currey Jacobs of New London (1:35) in the semifinal and put Tim Nimley of Muscatine on his shoulders (3:03) in the title match.
Ebert won by fall and earned a major decision before dropping a third-round match to Caden Benz of Mediapolis, 8-5. Ebert took a 10-8 decision over Cedric Castillo of Muscatine in the quarterfinals but lost to Gabe Carter of New London and Ayden Frazier of Washington to finish fourth.
“If Caleb is on, it is going to take a very good wrestler to beat him,” Coach Williams said. “We just need to work on being more consistent with him.”
The holiday break comes at a good time for the Spartans.
The team has been battling illness and injury during the first month of the season, Williams said, and was short-handed against Central DeWitt and Maquoketa in a double dual the Spartans split Dec. 19.
“What our team must figure out is how important each point is in a dual meet,” he said. “There were so many ways we could have saved or earned two more team points. If one person doesn’t get pinned, or if we get one more pin, we win the meet. When we get our whole team fighting for every team point, our success will increase.”
The Spartans host the Solon Duals on Saturday, Jan. 4, starting at 9 a.m. with Keokuk, Muscatine, Vinton, Midland and Anamosa.
