Six Trojans earn MVC All-Division hoops honors

IOWA CITY– The West High varsity boys basketball team placed six players on the 2017-18 Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) All-Division Basketball team rosters, released on Feb. 21.
Head coach Steve “Bergie” Bergman and staff took Mississippi Division Coach of the Year Honors with Patrick McCaffery and Seybian Sims earning unanimous selection to the division’s First Team. Dante Eldridge was a Second Team pick, while Evan Flitz and Hakeem Odunsi earned Honorable Mention. Flitz and Jake Anderson were also chosen for All-Academic recognition.
Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Matt Mimms earned Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year, while Cedar Falls’ A.J. Green took the Valley Division title. Wendell Elmers and staff at Dubuque Senior received Valley Division Coach of the Year honors.
The Trojans took a 19-4 overall record into the 2018 Class 4A State Basketball Tournament and won the Mississippi Division with a 14-2 Conference record.

MVC Mississippi Division First Team: Patrick McCaffery, Seybian Sims.
A junior, McCaffery led the Trojans with 473 points (pre-state tourney) this season averaging 20.6 per game and making 52.8 percent of his field goals. He was a 74.4 percent free throw shooter, made 53 assists, grabbed 33 steals, put up 23 blocks and forced 41 turnovers. McCaffery pulled down 148 rebounds with 6.4 per game.
A senior, Sims scored 335 points averaging 14.6 per game with a 75.8 field goal percentage. He nailed 69.3 percent of his free throws, made 53 assists, 19 steals and 30 blocks. Sims forced 45 turnovers and led the Trojans on the glass with 157 rebounds averaging 6.8 per game.
MVC Mississippi Division Second Team: Dante Eldridge.
A junior, Eldridge scored 261 points averaging 11.3 per game and sinking 51.6 percent of his field goals. He was a 83.9 percent free throw shooter, made 60 assists, 28 steals, had five blocks and forced 37 turnovers. Eldridge pulled down 35 rebounds with an average of 1.5 per game.
MVC Mississippi Division Honorable Mention: Evan Flitz, Hakeem Odunsi.
A senior, Flitz, Iowa’s top varsity football player, showed he has hoops skills, too, with 130 points (5.7 per game average) and a 46.1 field goal percentage. He made 55 assists, 30 steals, two blocks and forced 41 turnovers. Flitz pulled down 44 rebounds with an average of 1.9 per game as well.
A senior, Odunsi produced 77 points with an average of 4.3 per game and with a 46.4 field goal percentage. He made 45 assists, a dozen steals and nine blocks. Odunsi forced 27 turnovers and pulled down 55 rebounds with an average of 3.1 per game.
MVC All-Academic Honors… Flitz, Jake Anderson.
A senior, Anderson contributed 51 points for the Trojans with an average of 2.3 per game. He was a 37.5 percent field goal shooter and nailed 81 percent of his free throws. Anderson had 13 assists, five steals and forced 13 turnovers. He also pulled down a dozen rebounds this season.
