NLPD officers brighten Christmas with annual Shop With a Cop
Wal-Mart staff, Santa Claus, officers with the North Liberty Police Department, and nine local kids pose for a group photo at the Coralville Wal-Mart on Thursday, Dec. 19, during the North Liberty Police Department’s annual Shop With a Cop event. Nine area children were able to acquire presents for their families and giftwrap them. They also received a surprise gift as well.

CORALVILLE– The officers studied the documents before them, and questioned the young people in their custody. “What size does she wear?” “What does your brother like?” “Where’s the perfume at?”
These and many other vignettes were played out over the course of an hour Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Coralville Wal-Mart as officers with the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) conducted their annual Shop With a Cop event.
Nine kids were recommended for the program by their schools, and were able to select gifts for their families. The kiddos also received a special gift for themselves from Santa Claus later while wrapping the presents.
Money with which to buy the presents comes from a variety of sources including the officers themselves.
“We do our No Shave November,” NLPD Chief Diane Venenga said, “all the officers donate $30 and they get to wear their beards or goatees.” Money for fingerprinting (for businesses) is also applied to the fund, and members of the public donate as well, sometimes during the event itself. “We had a gentleman come up and give us a couple hundred dollars,” Venenga said. “It’s really nice, and people are really gracious.”
Those wishing to donate can stop by the police department during regular business hours to do so.
