Pantry “Rolls Into Spring” with 2nd annual toilet paper drive

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry (NLCP) hosts its second annual Roll Into Spring toilet paper drive throughout the month of March. The pantry is seeking donations of toilet paper, a product that is harder to come by than one may think.
“Last year we distributed over 10,000 rolls of toilet paper.” said pantry staff member Jake Putnam. “It’s one of the few items we have to limit, at one roll per family per week. If there are a lot of people in that family, that roll goes quickly.”
A few other points you might not know– SNAP benefits do not cover toilet paper, toilet paper is taxed as a luxury item, and local reservoirs do not provide toilet paper, forcing NLCP to purchase it at retail price in bulk. Each year, North Liberty Community Pantry spends roughly $3,000 to purchase toilet paper for its 763 pantry families.
Last March was the first Roll Into Spring drive. Area businesses, individuals and organizations collected over 1,500 rolls of toilet paper for the pantry. This year, pantry staff hope to double this amount, encouraging new businesses, organizations and teams to compete to collect the most TP, with donations of 50 cents equaling one roll.
