North Liberty man calls in false robbery to evade police

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty man allegedly called in a fake report in order to avoid being pulled over last week.
According to complaints, police observed a Ford Taurus being driven along Penn Street around 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, and recognized the driver as Bryce J. Wagehoft, who was barred from driving. In an attempt to divert the officer, Wagehoft then called 911 and reported an armed robbery in progress at a local convenience store. He even gave a description of a made-up suspect before hanging up, according to reports.
Multiple officers and agencies responded to the false report, but Wagehoft was still stopped and admitted to making the call to elude the officer.
Wagehoft has been charged with driving while barred (habitual offender), an aggravated misdemeanor, making a false report of an indictable crime, a serious misdemeanor; and making a non-emergency 911 call, a simple misdemeanor. If convicted of all three offenses, he could spend up to three years in prison.
He was still being held Friday at the Johnson County Jail on two separate $5,000 cash bonds.
