NL man arrested for sexual assault

Resident faces two charges stemming from vehicular incident
Maialiwa Kabandelwa

NORTH LIBERTY– A North Liberty man has been charged with sexual abuse after allegedly having intercourse with a woman against her will.
Maialiwa Kabandelwa, 31, was charged for acts stemming from an incident he had with a woman at about 6 p.m. on Nov. 2 at the home of Kabadelwa in the Golfview trailer court.
According to a criminal complaint, the victim intended to drive Kabadelwa to the post office but didn’t understand how to turn on the headlights of his vehicle.
Frustrated, Kabadelwa grabbed the woman’s cheek and slapped her. When she tried to exit the vehicle, he grabbed the hood of her sweatshirt, obstructing her breathing and causing her to fall. She told police that he refused to let her up for about a minute as she struggled to breathe.
This resulted in an aggravated misdemeanor charge for domestic abuse, punishable by up to two years in prison.
Later that day, Kabendelwa sexually assaulted the woman “after she made it clear to him that she did not want to have intercourse,” according to the police report.
This resulted in a second charge of third-degree sexual abuse, a class C felony. The felony is punishable for up to 10 years in prison.
Kebendelwa was booked at about 8 p.m. The two charges combined for a total cash or surety bond of $27,500.
Kabendelwa was being held at the Johnson County Jail as of Nov. 6.
