Newcomers to give the Creek Girls a boost

2019 Clear Creek Amana girls cross country preview

TIFFIN– It’s a mix of seasoned veterans and energetic rookies for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls cross country team this season.
The squad placed 10th out of 11 teams in a Class 3A district (state qualifying) meet last October in Fairfield, led by senior Kaylie Barker’s 22nd-place finish.
This year, Coach Jane Astor returns seven letter winners: senior Olivia Smyka, juniors Alexis Ponce, Kayla Jiras, Madeline Fox and Lauren Lasswell, and sophomores Allie Kounkel and Emily Coleman.
Smyka, Astor said, has put in mileage this summer, while Kounkel has worked hard on her strength and conditioning, as has Jiras, a state qualifier last spring in track and field. Fox, she said is a great leader. “Dedicated and determined, and put in mileage over the summer.”
New to the squad are senior Karsyn Stratton and freshmen Haidyn Barker and Avery Allan. Stratton is a multi-sport athlete who Astor said is, “adding excellent leadership to our team. She is a strong athlete who has goals. She will be a great contributor to our team.” Stratton, she added, “Plans to help our team this fall and knows cross country will help her other sports.”
Barker, sister to Kaylie, had a successful middle school career.
“She worked on her strength and conditioning this summer. She most likely has the biggest base on our team, and has good speed. She is going to be a dandy to watch,” said Astor. Allan, she said, “Is a strong athlete (who) will no doubt help the team.”
Overall, Astor said, “This team has the makings to become a very good unit. They are intelligent and talented. It is going to be fun watching them improve.”
