Mustangs run wild against the Women of Troy

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High Women of Troy fell to an uncharacteristic 0-4 Thursday, April 12, in their first home match of the 2018 season as the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs defeated them 6-0.
The Mustangs struck three times in the first half and scored again four minutes into the second half. A Penalty Kick (PK) made it 5-0 for Hempstead with the final goal hitting with 24 minutes remaining in the match.
Hempstead’s Grace Daack, a freshman, pulled off a hat trick with three goals while junior Erin Rieckens scored twice (including the PK) and Shyla Thurston, a senior, scored once. Karissa Beringer, the Mustangs’ sophomore keeper, made five saves through 80 minutes of play.
The Women of Troy opened the season with a 2-0 loss to Bettendorf on April 6 and fell 3-0 to Ames the next day. Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) foe Linn-Mar knocked off West High 5-0 in Marion on Tuesday, April 10.
West travels across Melrose Avenue on Friday, April 20, for the annual varsity doubleheader against City High at the University of Iowa’s Soccer Complex. The girls start at 5 p.m. with the boys to follow. The Women of Troy stay on the road, heading for Lower Kingston in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, April 24, to face Cedar Rapids Jefferson at 4:15 p.m., and are in Cedar Falls on Thursday, April 26.
