Lightning shocks CCA Clippers

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High School’s first varsity volleyball squad got its first home win on Tuesday, Aug. 29, sweeping the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, 3-0.
The Bolts fell to Solon, 3-1, the week before in the school’s first home match.
The win gave the Bolts their second victory of the season moving to 2-4 while handing the Clippers their fifth loss for a 3-5 showing early in the season.
Liberty took the first match, 25-10, and frustrated the Creek Girls, 25-10, in the second. The Clippers rallied hard in the third set, in an attempt to force a fourth match, but the Bolts held on for a 26-24 win and the sweep.
Liberty’s Olivia Slattery led all with a dozen kills, while LeeAnn Potter had eight. The Clippers were led by Amelia Pereira and Shauntina Williams with four kills apiece. Kaylee Berns had five ace serves for the Bolts and Kelsey Lipkea put up a pair of aces for CCA.
The Lightning host Cedar Rapids Washington on Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m. and compete at Iowa City West High’s tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9, starting at 9 a.m. Liberty travels to Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Thursday, Sept. 14, with a 7 p.m. start.
CCA also competes in the West High tournament on Saturday, Sept. 9, and hosts Independence on Tuesday, Sept. 12, starting at 7:30 p.m. The Clippers travel to Center Point to meet the Stormin’ Pointers on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
