Liberty High tops Fairfield, 46-44

FAIRFIELD– Liberty High’s varsity boys basketball team ended 2017 with a three-game losing streak, falling to a 3-6 record in their debut season. The Bolts and head coach Stu Ordman started the New Year with a win, pulling past the Fairfield Trojans, 46-44, in Fairfield, on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The Lightning took the first period, 15-12, and held the Trojans to four points in the second quarter for a 26-16 halftime advantage. Liberty was still ahead by 10 points, 40-30, going into the fourth period. However, the Trojans cut the gap with a 14-point effort while holding the Bolts to only six points in the quarter.
The win improved Liberty’s record to 4-6, while the Trojans dropped to 3-5.
Sophomore Andre Brandon led Liberty with 16 points, while freshman Tyler Grayson contributed nine, including one 3-point basket. Freshman Ethan O’Donnell produced six points, as did sophomore Sam Funke. Freshman Bo Gryp added three points, with two points apiece coming from juniors Iziah Paulsen and Ronnie Williams and freshman Kelby Telander.
Brandon led Liberty on the boards with four rebounds, while Grayson and O’Donnell had three apiece.
The Lightning travel to Waverly-Shell Rock High School, in Waverly, on Friday, Jan. 12, for a girl-boy varsity doubleheader (girls at 6 p.m., boys to follow) and visit Troy Mills, at the North Linn High School, on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 7:15 p.m. The Bolts return to their home floor Friday, Jan. 26, as Fairfield visits for a rematch at 7:45 p.m.
