Lady Spartans tackle ranked opponents

Solon sweeps rescheduled doubleheader from Central DeWitt

SOLON The Lady Spartans took on some heavy hitters.
Solons varsity softball team hosted a trio of ranked teams for a pair of weekend triangular tournaments and came away 1-2.
The Lady Spartans, ranked No. 14 in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, defeated unranked Keokuk and No. 15 (2A) Columbus Catholic (Waterloo) Friday before falling to No. 10 (5A) Ottumwa and No. 4 (5A) Iowa City High Saturday.
The Lady Spartans came into the tournament riding another winning streak, having overpowered Central DeWitt with 21 total hits and 19 runs in a home doubleheader June 25.
Senior Kayla West knocked in four runs while freshman Hilary Wilson claimed three RBI in the opener against Central DeWitt, an 11-6 victory, with sophomore Carly Ellison adding three of the teams five doubles.
Senior Jadyn Jeter and sophomore Jada Buffington each cleared the fence with home runs in the 8-1 nightcap. Jeter added a single and had two RBI, while Buffington had three RBI and a double.
Incoming freshman Kendall Jensen and West combined on the mound in game one. Sophomore Carly Ellison went the distance in the nightcap, allowing a single earned run on four hits while striking out two and walking two.
Solon notched its fourth win in a row June 25 to open the home tournament against Keokuk.
The Lady Spartans jumped out to a 6-0 lead over the Chiefs in the first inning and cruised to a 9-2 win.
Ellison captured the victory, allowing two unearned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one batter. Senior Madison Sprague pitched a single inning of scoreless relief.
Jeter, West, Buffington and junior Monet Barnhouse had two hits each. Barnhouse had a double and two RBI, while Wilson added a triple and two RBI. Solon amassed 13 hits.
Later in the day, the Lady Spartans broke open a 2-2 tie with a run in the fourth and a run in the seventh to slip past Columbus Catholic, 4-2.
Solon took an early 2-0 lead, but Columbus nicked starter Jensen for an unearned run and a solo homer. Jensen struck out six and walked three while allowing six hits.
Junior Sarah Heick, sophomore Ava Stebral and Wilson claimed RBI for the Lady Spartans. Heick, Stebral and senior Peyton Sands had two hits each, with sophomore Camryn Keith adding a double.
The following day, Ottumwa took a 3-0 lead over Solon in the first inning and while the Lady Spartans knotted things up in the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs pushed past with three runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh for a 7-3 win.
Ellison suffered the loss for Solon, allowing only three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking one.
Ottumwas Ashton Brown held the Lady Spartans to five singles while striking out 11 and walking five. Heick and Ellison had two hits each, with Buffington providing the other.
Solon could manage only three hits, all singles, against City High in the final game of the weekend. Ellison, Jeter and Heick accounted for the Lady Spartan offense in the 8-0 loss.
West and Jensen combined on the mound to allow seven hits, with Jensen striking out four batters.
Solon moved to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the WaMaC Conference East Division.
