JV Clippers find success

Banwart, Cory and Beltz earn championships at Austin Roberts Memorial Tournament

SPENCER— Clear Creek Amana (CCA) junior varsity (JV) wrestlers competed in the Austin Roberts Memorial Tournament Saturday, Dec. 16, in Spencer, and crowned three champions.
Noah Banwart won the 105-110-pound class by pinning LeMars’ Donavon Daggett in 1:04 in the finals. Banwart pinned Luverne’s Abraham Hernandez in 3:08 in the first round and took a 13-6 decision from West Lyon’s Jose Richards in the semifinals.
Harrison Cory won the 148-156-pound class by pinning Dylann Van Berkum, of Central Lyon-George-Little Rock, in 1:23 in the finals. Cory pinned Sioux Center’s Adan Gomez in 3:04 in the first round and pinned Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley’s Reid Vande Stroet in 39 seconds in the semis.
Spencer Beltz won the 199-216-pound class with a 3-1 decision over Spencer’s Zach O’Claire in the finals, pinned LeMars’ Andrew Murra in 1:57 in the first round and pinned Spirit Lake’s Preston Murray in the semifinals in 37 seconds.
Alex Figueroa was the runner up in the 143-147-pound class, dropping a 1-0 decision to Mitchell Schilmoeller of Le Mars in the finals. Figueroa took a 14-4 major decision from Aiden Ellis, of Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley, in the first round and won a 5-4 decision over Spencer’s Trey Johnson in the semifinals.
TJ Hansen was fourth in 216-228-pound competition after being pinned in 1:39 by Eagle Grove’s Leo Calles in the first round, falling in 43 seconds to Mario Uscanga, of Boyden-Hull-Rock Valley, in the semis and losing by fall in 2:41 to Sawyer Curtis, of Algona, in the third round.
The JV Clippers compete Thursday, Jan. 4, in a double dual with the varsity, at Center Point-Urbana, against the Stormin’ Pointers and Liberty High’s Lightning starting at 6 p.m. then travel to New London on Monday, Jan. 8, for a JV Tournament starting at 5:30 p.m. The Creek Boys will also see action on Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Iowa City Regina, starting at 6 p.m.
