Fun, fitness and a flashy medal

NORTH LIBERTY– Eighty-eight kids swam, biked and ran in the sixth-annual Just Tri Youth Triathlon put on by the North Liberty Recreation Department on Sunday, July 30. The kids (divided by age group) swam in the rec center’s indoor pool then biked around the surrounding neighborhood, and finished by running around the pond at the Liberty Centre commercial development before being presented with a medal for their efforts. Last year 69 area kids participated in the non-competitive event.
“We do it to get the kids active, to introduce them to doing three sports at the same time, and really … just to have fun,” Aquatics Supervisor Ashley Kipp said. “It’s called the ‘Just Tri Triathlon,’ to just try it and see if they like it.”
While other youth triathlons around the state feature timed events and are competitive, with the potential for advancing to regional or even higher-level competition, the North Liberty event is non-competitive, with each participant having received a medal upon completion.
“Ours is just supposed to be fun,” Kipp said. “Our goal is that if they like it, maybe next summer try a race that is timed, or try a longer distance as ours are fairly short.”
