Liberty falls 56-52 to CR Jefferson with 12 points from Brynlee Slockett

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High’s varsity girls got two games in for the 2020-2021 season before the Christmas break, but were kept on the hunt for their first win after a Tuesday, Dec. 22, trip to Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, and a battle on the hardwood with the J-Hawks.
Jefferson pulled out a 56-52 win improving to 1-2 while dropping the Lightning to 0-2.
Jefferson took the first period 12-8 and thanks to an 18-point second period, led Liberty 30-19 at halftime. A 15-point effort by the Bolts in the third narrowed the gap, but the J-Hawks still held a 42-34 advantage going into the final quarter. An 18-point effort kept Liberty alive in the fourth period, but the J-Hawks held on for the win.
Brynlee Slockett, a freshman, led Liberty with 12 points including a trio of three-point baskets. Slockett was the only Liberty player to reach double-digits as Kennedy Daugherty, Sunny Yarnell and Keiko Ono-Fullard contributed eight points apiece.
Liberty opens 2021 with a Tuesday, Jan. 5, trip to City High for a girl-boy doubleheader, and travels to Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic High School on Friday, Jan. 8, before hosting Western Dubuque on Friday, Jan. 15.
